Flight attendant reveals 'terrible' secret about drinking water on planes

"To any passenger, whether you are a frequent flyer, occasional flyer, seasonal flyer or about to become a first-time flyer, I want to tell you: Never drink tap water from an airplane bathroom, even if it's been boiled," flight attendant Celina Bedding told the Mirror .

"Many studies have shown that it is not hygienic to drink. You may have seen this sign because most planes have this sign next to the water fountain. You may think it is just a way to entice you to buy a drink. But it is actually for your own health. So, definitely do not drink tap water on the plane," she continued.

Airplane drinking water criticized for being unhygienic

Bedding even recommends that passengers avoid drinking pre-made coffee or tea on the plane.

She says her favorite in-flight drink is tomato juice, and while that may seem odd, there's science behind it. Taste buds change during flight due to the lower pressure and humidity inside the cabin.

A study commissioned by German airline Lufthansa found that tomato juice tastes most intense at 30,000 feet.

A 2019 study by Hunter College found that many airlines may be providing passengers with unhealthy drinking water. The researchers recommended that fliers drink only bottled water.

Former flight attendant Kat Kamalani has shared why she doesn't drink tea and coffee on planes. Kat advises passengers not to consume any liquids that aren't sealed, such as in cans or bottles.

"The reason is that the water tanks on planes are never cleaned. They're disgusting," she said. Flight attendants rarely drink beverages on planes, Kat said. "They come from the same water tank, so when you have coffee and tea, it's all coming from the same water. Parental advice: never ask for hot water and put it in your baby's bottle."

So how to handle the situation, she said: Ask for a bottle of water next to you and hot water in a cup, then mix a pitcher of bottled water for the baby, put it in a cup and heat it up.

Kat's shared video has attracted more than 5.2 million views and people were shocked by her revelation.

Many flight attendants advise passengers not to drink non-bottled water on planes.

Bedding also urged passengers to "avoid airplane food as much as possible" as it is often high in salt and sugar to counteract the numbing effect of flying.

“The reason behind this is because of the cabin pressure, we lose about 30% of our sense of taste. So the companies that prepare food for airlines add a lot of salt to it to make it taste good and taste great at 40,000 feet,” she explains.

Instead, Bedding suggests opting for a salad or fruit salad when traveling and drinking water "before, during, and after your flight" to stay hydrated....
