According to information from the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO), at noon on June 2, 2025, the national electricity consumption capacity recorded a record high with a peak capacity of up to 51,290MW, exceeding 1,757MW compared to the peak in 2024 (49,533MW). This 1,757MW excess capacity is equivalent to the total installed capacity of two plants: Lai Chau Hydropower Plant (1,200MW) and Thai Binh 1 Thermal Power Plant (600MW). This is a consequence of the widespread severe hot weather occurring in the North and Central regions.

Quick information from Hanoi Electricity Corporation, during the noon peak, the peak capacity in Hanoi reached a new record of 5,430MW, exceeding the peak in 2024 (5,263MW). According to the Northern Electricity Corporation, the power consumption capacity in 27 provinces/cities in the Northern region (from Ha Tinh and beyond, excluding Hanoi) during the noon peak today also reached a new record of 17,400MW, exceeding 100MW compared to the peak in 2024 (17,300MW).
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, over the past two days, the Northern region has been experiencing the most severe heat wave since the beginning of summer. Most of the Northern and North Central regions recorded the highest temperature of 37-39°C, with many places exceeding 40°C such as Bac Giang (40.1°C), Lang Road - Hanoi (40.2°C). The severe heat combined with low humidity of only 40-45% has caused the demand for electricity to skyrocket, especially for cooling equipment.

To prevent the risk of local grid overload in some residential and urban areas, as well as to ensure safe operation of the power system, EVN recommends that customers use electricity safely, economically and effectively, especially during peak hours at noon (13:00–15:00) and in the evening (21:00–23:00); use air conditioning reasonably, set at a temperature of 27°C or higher, combined with fans to increase cooling efficiency; limit the simultaneous use of many high-capacity electrical devices, to avoid the risk of overload, incidents, and fires in households, agencies and offices.
It is known that in 2024, in May, the national electricity consumption also reached a new record peak of 1.0019 billion kWh. This is the first time in history that the national electricity consumption in a day exceeded 1 billion kWh.
