According to information from the National Power System and Electricity Market Operation Company (NSMO), on May 15th, nationwide electricity consumption reached approximately 1.152 billion kWh, while the peak capacity of the national power system reached 54,654 MW at 2:15 PM. This is the highest level since the beginning of 2026, both in terms of daily electricity production and peak capacity.

Just two days earlier, on May 13th, the national power system recorded a peak capacity of 52,487 MW at 4:10 PM, with nationwide electricity production reaching 1.103 billion kWh/day. The continuous breaking of records shows the immense pressure on electricity operation and supply during this peak dry season.

According to NSMO's assessment, the recent surge in electricity demand is consistent with forecasts made before the April 30th - May 1st holiday, when electricity demand was expected to increase rapidly again after the holiday, along with the impact of widespread hot weather.

To meet load demand, the national power system continues to operate safely and stably, with power sources optimally mobilized to ensure electricity supply even in extreme weather conditions. System voltage and load levels of equipment remain within permissible operating limits.

According to forecasts, from the end of May 2026, Hanoi , the Northern Delta, and North Central Vietnam are likely to experience intense heatwaves with temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius.

The National Center for Hydrometeorology also predicts that there is a 95% probability of El Nino returning from June, leading to increased heatwaves, higher temperatures, and unpredictable extreme weather events this summer. This could cause electricity consumption to remain high in the coming period.

Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) is working closely with NSMO to ensure a safe, stable, and continuous electricity supply. Along with the efforts of the electricity sector, EVN advises people, businesses, and agencies to increase the use of electricity economically and efficiently, especially during peak hours.

The electricity sector recommends that people use air conditioners reasonably, setting them at 26-27 degrees Celsius or higher and combining them with fans to increase cooling efficiency; limit the simultaneous use of multiple high-power electrical appliances during peak hours; turn off unnecessary appliances when not in use, and make maximum use of natural light and ventilation.

According to EVN, using electricity economically and efficiently not only helps reduce electricity costs but also contributes to reducing pressure on the national power system during the peak dry season. In addition, customers are advised to proactively monitor their daily electricity consumption through the customer care applications of the power corporations to adjust their electricity usage accordingly.
