The tumultuous childhood of writer Phùng Quán revolves around the fighting life and sacrifices of 13-14 year old teenagers in the ranks of the Trần Cao Vân Regiment's Youth Scout Team.
The work concisely depicts the participation in combat and sacrifice at a very young age of over 30 teenagers, focusing on the representative characters of Luom, Mung, Quynh the nightingale, and a series of other characters such as Tu Dat, Bong the snake-skinned, Vinh the sưa tree... In 1988, the novel was published and received the Children's Literature Award of the Vietnam Writers Association . Two years later, the work was adapted into a film.

Now, the Vietnam Youth Theatre officially brings these characters to the stage in a musical. The play is written by playwright Bui Hong Que and directed by Meritorious Artist Le Anh Tuyet. Set during the resistance against the French in Hue , the musical tells the story of courageous young scouts. Despite living amidst bombs, bullets, and danger, the characters retain their youthful innocence, their yearning for freedom, and their intense patriotism.
Through the journey of young boys and girls undertaking revolutionary missions, the work recreates the image of a generation of Vietnamese youth full of courage, ready to sacrifice for national independence. In addition, the musical is also an emotional dialogue between today's young generation and their elders of the past. The work prompts much reflection on the value of peace, honesty, responsibility, and dedication to the country.
According to director and Meritorious Artist Le Anh Tuyet, the staging of the musical "Fierce Childhood" is an effort by the Vietnam Youth Theatre to realize the spirit of Resolution No. 80/NQ-TW on the development of Vietnamese culture. Accordingly, culture is taken as the foundation for building a comprehensively developed Vietnamese person, rich in patriotism, compassion, resilience, and social responsibility.
The staging and performance of this musical not only possesses artistic value but also aims to educate young people about beautiful ideals of life. At the same time, it contributes to fostering a sense of responsibility, compassion, and dedication to the community in today's youth.
The musical "A Turbulent Childhood" is scheduled to premiere this August.
