Apple CEO Tim Cook officially arrived in Tokyo on September 25 to attend the reopening ceremony of Apple Ginza, the company's first retail store outside the United States.
Apple Ginza is of particular importance to the company, as it was the company's first store overseas and first opened in 2003. By 2022, Apple will temporarily close this store to completely rebuild it.
“This reopening is another incredible milestone in our journey in Japan, and a symbol of Apple’s strong relationship with customers and communities across the country,” said Cook.
During his visit, Cook immersed himself in Japanese pop culture, meeting boy band Number_i and hugging the iconic character Pikachu. He also visited Bandai Namco headquarters to try out the newly released Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra on iOS.
Here, the Apple CEO emphasized the company's focus on gaming and its engagement with developers. On social media, Cook also called Japan a "gamer paradise".
According to Apple's website, the Ginza store is powered by 100% renewable energy. The reopening of the Apple Ginza store combines sustainability with modern design, using locally sourced materials and a double-glazed facade with adaptive shutters that regulate light and temperature throughout the day.
Additionally, this innovative design allows each floor to be flooded with natural light and offers a balcony-like space overlooking the bustling streets of Ginza. Meanwhile, inside the store, wooden panels are used in a Japanese design.
