Previously, on June 15, Cambodian prosecutors recommended prosecuting two suspects, a Chinese couple, Lai Wenshao (male, 30 years old) and Cai Huijuan (female, 39 years old), on charges of "torture and murder."
Specific details regarding the torture allegations were not disclosed by the police. However, Koreaboo speculates that if convicted, the suspect could face life imprisonment.
According to Kmib, the victim's body is currently being kept in cold storage at a temple near Phnom Penh. Local police plan to conduct an autopsy on Ayeong soon.
Initially, the victim's family objected to an autopsy, but they changed their minds after being persuaded by local police and the South Korean embassy.
On June 11th, media outlets reported that a South Korean woman in her 30s was found dead in Cambodia on June 6th. Her body was discovered by locals wrapped in a blanket and dumped in a pond in a village near Phnom Penh.
The two suspects were arrested shortly afterward. The couple were running a medical clinic in Phnom Penh.
According to Rasmei Kampuchea (Cambodia), the two suspects admitted to disposing of the body but denied murdering the South Korean woman.
The suspects confessed that the girl had come to their clinic on June 4th for intravenous fluids and serum injections. Afterward, she suddenly had a seizure and stopped breathing. Following her death, the suspects and their wife used their private vehicle to transport the victim's body to Kandal province to dispose of it.
Cambodian police are actively investigating the cause of Ah Yeong's death.
There are also suspicions that Ah Yeong was assaulted, as she was found with a severely swollen face. According to Chosun, Cambodian police are continuing to investigate whether Ah Yeong sustained any injuries before her death.
According to the Korea Herald, although the victim's identity has not been revealed by authorities, based on the blurred Instagram account photo in the news report, netizens believe the unfortunate victim was streamer Byun Ah Yeong.
