Depicting the character of a soldier in today's 4.0 era.

The book "The Glorious Name of Uncle Ho's Soldiers" (People's Army Publishing House, 2024) by Colonel and journalist Nguyen Van Hai of the People's Army Newspaper contains many new and interesting points. Writer Phung Van Khai, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Army Literature and Arts Magazine, commented: "The book 'The Glorious Name of Uncle Ho's Soldiers' by journalist Nguyen Van Hai is one of the works that offers a profound, comprehensive, and dialectical perspective on military life and the mission of soldiers in war and peace ."

This book is a collection of selected journalistic works on the theme of "Uncle Ho's Soldiers" published by him over the past 10 years, divided into two parts: Part I - "Preserving and Promoting the Cultural Values of Uncle Ho's Soldiers" and Part II - "Footprints of Soldiers Across the Nation". The two parts of the book blend and complement each other, forming a unified whole, from portraying the appearance, demeanor, and noble character of "Uncle Ho's Soldiers" with their distinctive values to stories demonstrating the will, spirit of hard work, dedication, and creativity of today's officers and soldiers…

From generalizations to insightful perspectives and insightful interpretations, to vivid practical stories reflecting real life experiences, observations, and feelings, the book offers a wealth of insights. As Major General, Associate Professor, and Doctor Nguyen Ba Duong – a member of the Central Theoretical Council – remarked: “In this book, alongside scholarly works on the history and traditions of the Army, with their valuable and interesting summaries and theoretical and practical value, there are also journalistic and narrative pieces that portray the beauty of the image of ‘Uncle Ho’s soldiers’ living and fighting in peacetime, with many diverse and rich aspects and dimensions. Through the journalistic and narrative genres, the author has meticulously explored and sketched the appearance, character, qualities, willpower, determination, and actions of soldiers who, wherever they are, whatever they do, and whatever their position, willingly and wholeheartedly serve the Fatherland and the People.”

He also affirmed that the issue raised in the book is very valuable because it represents a distinctive and typical aspect of Vietnamese military culture in the modern era.

Journalist Nguyen Van Hai received the C Prize at the 17th National Journalism Awards.

This distinctive characteristic is like a red thread running through the works of journalist Nguyen Van Hai, helping the public to understand more deeply the unique and distinctive humanistic cultural value of the title "Uncle Ho's Soldiers": "Like a river that daily deposits silt to make plants grow better, 'Uncle Ho's Soldiers' over time become increasingly steadfast in their fighting spirit and will, pure in their morality and soul, developed in intellect and culture, and clearly demonstrate themselves as a pioneering force in the cause of protecting and building the country" (The Glorious Title - the Honor of "Uncle Ho's Soldiers").

Of course, the conclusions drawn by journalist Nguyen Van Hai are not new, but they have been carefully distilled and refined, drawing from truth and real-life practice, thereby brilliantly portraying the beautiful qualities of today's soldiers and fighters. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tu's insightful assessment of this book is: "The words and sentences in this book may not all be overflowing with life, reality, and intellect, but they are brimming with dedication and a soldier's spirit, full of responsibility in interpreting and deepening the simple yet noble beauty unique to the soldiers of Uncle Ho's army."

Intelligent, experienced, and possessing a deep love for soldiers.

That simple yet noble beauty becomes even more compelling when expressed through the simple, easy-to-understand writing style of a journalist-soldier who has served in the military for 32 years, wielding both a gun and a pen, leaving his mark on every path from mountains to distant islands… and viewed through the lens of culture and journalism-media.

Reading books is like meeting people; writer Nguyen Van Hai doesn't use flowery language or grandiose pronouncements, even though his topics are of contemporary significance. He also doesn't write in a conventional way, but is flexible in each piece, even with many old stories that have stood the test of time for decades. Therefore, the book retains its appeal and its own life, as the author knows how to refresh an old topic, subtly selecting valuable details without being cliché, praising without being bland or monotonous…

And achieving that is certainly not easy; it requires a skilled writer who is both intelligent, experienced, and possesses a deep love for soldiers… Journalist and Colonel Nguyen Van Hai has embodied all of these qualities, perfectly conveying them in this book with the responsibility and mission of a “faithful secretary of the times.”

During his 23 years in journalism, author Nguyen Van Hai has won 22 official national, national, and military-level journalism awards, including: 5 A prizes (First Prize), 10 B prizes (Second Prize), and 7 C prizes (Third Prize). These include 5 (2 A, 1 B, 2 C) National Journalism Awards; 3 (2 A, 1 B) National Journalism Awards on Party Building (Golden Hammer and Sickle Award); First Prize in the writing competition "Heroic Army, Strong National Defense" in 2019; and the "For the Cause of Vietnamese Journalism" Medal in 2021...

A successful work is not only the effort of the writer but also a keen understanding of reader preferences and the right timing. This book was published amidst a growing trend of individuals exploiting the image of the Ho Chi Minh Army for personal gain online, significantly impacting the reputation and honor of officers and soldiers in the Vietnam People's Army… this is a positive point.

Clearly, if each person, every day, spreads beautiful images that are true to the nature of a revolutionary soldier, it is an effective solution for the struggle to refute false and hostile viewpoints. The simple yet noble beauty of the soldiers in the book by journalist-soldier Nguyen Van Hai is a valuable resource, a way to look at, reflect upon, and combat the fake news and harmful information that are currently rampant.

The book affirmed an immutable truth: amidst bombs and bullets, in the eye of the storm, or on the front lines of the fight against epidemics... there is no place in this country where the Ho Chi Minh's soldiers are absent. It is precisely because they are close to the people, respect the people, and are ready to sacrifice for the people that generations of officers and soldiers have earned the people's complete trust. Therefore, a few simple incidents cannot easily shake the feelings, diminish the close-knit, blood-and-flesh tradition between the military and the people, or diminish the character of soldiers in peacetime…

Let me conclude this article about the book with the author's heartfelt words, which also convey his message to the public: “Thanks to the traditions and qualities of ‘Uncle Ho’s Soldiers,’ I have been nurtured and enriched with positive energy in my life and work, contributing to the development of my character as a journalist-soldier, ‘both politically sound and professionally competent.’ Through this book, I also want to contribute another voice, a perspective, and a testament to further affirm the unique cultural values of the title and designation of ‘Uncle Ho’s Soldiers,’ while spreading the fine traditions of our Army to readers…”
