Lobster is an expensive seafood but is being sold on social networks at a surprisingly cheap price, less than 10,000 VND/piece.
From the past to the present, lobster is a luxury item, with an expensive price of up to millions of VND per kilogram. However, recently, on online seafood markets, a type of 'mini' lobster is being sold at a dirt cheap price, less than 10,000 VND/piece, attracting the attention of many people.
According to a survey by reporters, mini lobsters, also known as baby lobsters, small lobsters, are the smallest type. size 18-22 shrimp/kg, sold for 9,000 VND/shrimp. For larger shrimp, size 10-14 shrimp/kg, the price ranges from 320,000 - 350,000 VND, equivalent to about 22,000 VND/shrimp.
Older sister Hong Cuc, a major lobster supplier in Tan Phu district, Ho Chi Minh City, revealed: "Cheap baby lobsters are usually frozen or suffocated, but still ensure freshness and deliciousness."
This seller added that because the price is cheap, this item sells very well, sometimes she sells up to 30kg. Because the distributor of baby lobsters is in another province, each time she imports, she only dares to import a small quantity, just enough to sell.
However, because the shrimp is small, there is not much meat on the shrimp, so when customers buy shrimp, she recommends using it to cook hot pot dishes or soup will be better steamed.
Mr. Duy Duong, owner of a seafood store in District 10, shared that the baby lobsters sold on the online market are actually green lobsters or bamboo lobsters. If the lobsters are still alive and swimming well, they cost about 60,000 VND for a 100-gram lobster. However, with seafood in general, when there are signs of suffocated Or frozen goods, the selling price will be reduced a lot.
Regarding the type of shrimp that costs less than 10,000 VND/piece and is widely sold on the online market, Mr. Duong said that this type of small shrimp may be sick or weak, suffocating in large numbers due to the climate, which is why it is sold at such a 'cheap' price.
“Lobsters are mainly heavy in the head, so customers have to buy large sizes, from 4-5 lobsters/kg to have enough meat to eat. With very small lobsters, most of them only have shells,” Mr. Duong further explained.
Some customers also shared their real experiences after buying mini lobsters through the online market. Accordingly, this type of lobster has quite sweet meat but is not firm, some are even mushy. Another group said that with such a cheap price, less than 10,000 VND, the low quality is understandable and they accepted to buy it to experience.
