Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Manh Hung: From challenging surgeries to the aspiration to elevate surgical standards at Vinmec.

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - With over 30 years of dedication to gastrointestinal surgery, Associate Professor, Doctor Tran Manh Hung has associated his name with "brain-challenging" surgeries - complex, rare cases, sometimes only a few of which are recorded in the world's medical literature.

That journey continues at Vinmec Smart City, where he hopes to build a gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and urological surgery center that meets international standards.

Choosing the difficult path of surgery and pioneering new techniques.

Even as a medical student, while many of his peers were still exploring different paths, Dr. Tran Manh Hung chose abdominal surgery – a field considered "the most difficult of all." This is because patients admitted to the hospital are often in critical condition, with overlapping injuries directly affecting vital organs.

"Every abdominal surgery is like walking on a tightrope. Just one small mistake can cost a patient their chance of survival," he shared. But it is precisely this harsh reality that motivates him to stay, because it is where patients need doctors the most.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Manh Hung - Head of the Department of General Surgery, Vinmec Smart City General Hospital ( Hanoi ).

Throughout his more than 30-year career, Associate Professor, Doctor Tran Manh Hung has performed numerous surgeries that have been recognized internationally as miracles.

One such case involved a 23-year-old Laotian woman who suffered severe burns to her entire upper digestive tract due to a corrosive substance. Her esophagus was completely constricted, making eating and drinking impossible, and her body was emaciated, weighing only 34 kg. After a month of intensive care to improve her condition, Dr. Hung and his team performed an 8-hour surgery to remove her entire esophagus and reconstruct her digestive tract. As a result, after only 8 days, the patient was able to eat porridge on her own – a simple feat that had been a dream for the young woman for many months.

Another notable case involved a pregnant woman in her ninth month of pregnancy who suffered gastrointestinal bleeding, endangering both mother and child. With the fetus growing large enough to obscure the entire abdominal cavity, the medical team faced a "needle in a haystack" situation. Dr. Hung's crucial decision – performing both surgery and colonoscopy simultaneously – allowed him to detect the damage in time, saving both mother and child. The baby's first cries the following day were a meaningful gift, a testament to the doctor's courage and dedication.

Not only is Dr. Hung a "nemesis" of difficult cases, but he has also pioneered the implementation of many advanced gastrointestinal surgery techniques at Bach Mai Hospital, such as: surgery to treat necrotizing pancreatitis, endoscopic surgery to treat esophageal cancer, endoscopic upper gastrointestinal reconstruction, etc. These techniques help patients experience less pain, recover faster, and reduce complications, offering hope to thousands of patients who were once in a hopeless situation.

Alongside his surgical work, he is also a leading researcher with dozens of publications, 74 scientific articles (9 of which were published in international ISI and Scopus journals), and the author of numerous monographs on endoscopic surgery. To many generations of students, he is known as a dedicated teacher, not only teaching skills but also instilling a passion for the profession and a desire to contribute to humanistic medicine.

A new journey at Vinmec Smart City

After more than three decades of working at Bach Mai Hospital – where he performed thousands of complex gastrointestinal surgeries and trained many generations of doctors – Associate Professor, Doctor Tran Manh Hung has taken on the role of Head of the General Surgery Department at Vinmec Smart City Hospital.

Sharing his thoughts on this decision, he said: “I have collaborated with colleagues at Vinmec many times and consider it a fortunate coincidence. Vinmec's philosophy of 'caring with talent, medical ethics, and empathy' resonates deeply with my professional ideals, prompting me to choose Vinmec Smart City for the next stage of my career.”
