That journey continues at Vinmec Smart City, where he hopes to build an international standard gastroenterology - hepatobiliary - urology center.
Choosing the difficult path of surgery and pioneering new techniques
As a medical student, while many of his friends were still searching for a career path, Dr. Tran Manh Hung chose abdominal surgery - a field considered "the most difficult of the difficult". Because hospitalized patients are often in critical condition, with overlapping injuries, directly related to vital organs.
“Every abdominal surgery is like walking on a tightrope. Just one small mistake can take away the patient’s chance of survival,” he shared. But it is this harshness that motivates him to stick with it, because that is where patients need doctors the most.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Manh Hung - Head of General Surgery Department, Vinmec Smart City General Hospital ( Hanoi ).
In more than 30 years of career, Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Tran Manh Hung has performed many surgeries recognized as miracles by the international medical community.
One of them is the case of a 23-year-old Laotian woman who suffered burns to her entire upper digestive tract due to corrosive substances. Her esophagus contracted and completely narrowed, making her unable to eat or drink, and her body was exhausted to 34kg. After a month of intensive care to improve her condition, Dr. Hung and his team performed an 8-hour surgery, cutting off the entire esophagus and reconstructing the digestive tract. As a result, after only 8 days, the patient was able to eat porridge on her own - a simple thing but a dream of many months for the young girl.
Another milestone was the case of a pregnant woman in her ninth month of pregnancy who suffered from gastrointestinal bleeding, threatening the lives of both mother and child. When the fetus was so large that it covered the entire abdomen, the team was faced with a situation of “looking for a needle in a haystack”. Dr. Hung’s “brain-weighing” decision at that time - performing surgery and colonoscopy at the same time - promptly detected the injury, saving the lives of both mother and child. The baby’s cry the next day was a meaningful gift for the doctor’s courage and dedication.
Not only is he the “nemesis” of difficult cases, Dr. Hung is also a pioneer in implementing many advanced digestive surgery techniques at Bach Mai Hospital such as: surgery to treat necrotizing pancreatitis, endoscopic surgery to treat esophageal cancer, endoscopic reconstruction of the upper digestive tract... These techniques help patients to have less pain, recover quickly and reduce complications, opening up hope for thousands of cases that were once in a deadlock.
In addition to surgery, he is also an in-depth researcher with dozens of works, 74 scientific articles (9 published in international journals ISI, Scopus) and is the author of many monographs on laparoscopic surgery. To many generations of students, he is known as a dedicated teacher, not only teaching skills but also instilling the passion for the profession and the desire to contribute to humanistic medicine.
