According to information from the Central Committee's Foreign Affairs Department on February 28, on the occasion of Cambodia's successful holding of the 5th Senate election on February 25, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong sent a congratulatory letter to the Chairman of the Cambodian People's Party, Hun Sen. In the letter, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong extended warm congratulations to Chairman Hun Sen, the leaders, and cadres and members of the Cambodian People's Party on the successful outcome of the 5th election. "In particular, the Cambodian People's Party achieved a great victory in this election. The election results once again affirm the role and position of the Cambodian People's Party under the leadership of Comrade Hun Sen," the letter stated. The General Secretary expressed confidence that with the achievements already made, along with rich experience and the support of the Cambodian people, the Cambodian People's Party, headed by Chairman Hun Sen, will continue to achieve many new and greater successes in the cause of protecting, building, and developing Cambodia. The head of the Communist Party of Vietnam affirmed that Vietnam will continue to do its utmost, together with Cambodia, to preserve and cultivate the good relationship between the two countries, ensuring its continued development in depth, practicality, and effectiveness in areas that benefit the people of both countries, contributing to peace , stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world. Earlier, on February 26th, on the occasion of Cambodia's successful holding of the 5th term Senate election, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue also sent a congratulatory letter to Cambodian Senate President Say Chhum.

Hun Sen's party won overwhelmingly.

The Cambodian Senate election is not conducted by universal suffrage. The legislative body has 62 seats, with 58 senators elected through the ballots of incumbent National Assembly members and commune/ward council members. Of the remaining four senatorial seats, two are appointed by the King of Cambodia and two are nominated by the National Assembly through a confidence vote process. 11,730 out of 11,747 registered voters participated in the election on February 25th. Preliminary vote counts released by the Cambodian National Election Commission show that the Cambodian People's Party , chaired by Hun Sen, received 10,052 votes, followed by the Khmer Will Party with 1,394 votes. The FUNCINPEC and National Power parties received approximately 250 votes each. Following the preliminary results, the Cambodian People's Party announced it would nominate Hun Sen to serve as president of the Senate next April.
