UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay visited the ancient city of Hue ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Hue Imperial Citadel complex, Vietnam's first site to be recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

On September 7th, Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and her delegation visited the Hue Imperial Citadel complex, ahead of the 30th anniversary of this complex, the first Vietnamese heritage site to be recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The Chairman of the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province, Nguyen Van Phuong, along with leaders of various departments and agencies, warmly welcomed Ms. Audrey Azoulay and the UNESCO delegation.

Highly appreciating the visit of the UNESCO Director-General to Vietnam and Thua Thien Hue province, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Hue Imperial Citadel complex being recognized by UNESCO, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Phuong affirmed that Thua Thien Hue province is steadfast in its development orientation based on preserving and promoting the values ​​of the ancient capital's heritage and Hue's cultural identity, with its distinctive culture, heritage, ecology, landscape, environmental friendliness, and smart development.

Ms. Audrey Azoulay expressed her delight at visiting Hue for the first time and the Hue Imperial Citadel complex. She highly appreciated the efforts that Thua Thien Hue province and the Hue Imperial Citadel Conservation Center have been making to restore, preserve, protect, and promote the heritage values ​​that have been built.

“It is wonderful to be in the space of the Hue Imperial Citadel, a place that has embodied so much culture, knowledge, and skill of generations of Vietnamese people. And in music , Hue court music is the first Vietnamese asset to be recognized internationally, included in the list of intangible cultural heritage,” Ms. Audrey Azoulay expressed.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay was welcomed by the leaders of Thua Thien Hue province and visited the Imperial Palace and the Forbidden City of Hue.

The Director-General of UNESCO also emphasized that Hue was the first place to be designated a World Heritage site after Vietnam joined UNESCO. The heritage and knowledge of the craftsmen who made this possible are invaluable and must be passed on to future generations. In particular, the restoration, promotion, and preservation of Hue's heritage must continue indefinitely, across generations, and always in the best possible condition.

The Director-General of UNESCO affirmed that choosing Hue for Vietnam's first visit was to show Thua Thien Hue province that UNESCO is very interested in the area and that UNESCO will work alongside Thua Thien Hue to preserve and promote the heritage values ​​of Hue. UNESCO not only assists Hue in the technical field, but sometimes also in the financial field.

"We have always cherished Hue and will continue to support and develop alongside it. I admire Vietnam, a country that has preserved its thousands of years of traditional culture," emphasized Audrey Azoulay.

Over the past period, with the active and effective technical and financial support, as well as international fundraising efforts from UNESCO in the field of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Hue, the heritage of the ancient capital of Hue has overcome the emergency rescue phase and is gradually being revived, restoring the original appearance of a historical capital.

According to UNESCO's assessment, the conservation of Hue's historical sites is currently entering a stable and sustainable development phase. Restoration work is carried out professionally, strictly adhering to the International Convention on the Conservation of Monuments, the Law on Cultural Heritage, and regulations on the preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of historical and cultural relics and scenic spots, as well as regulations on basic construction, ensuring conservation standards and the authenticity of the structures. In particular, the conservation of cultural heritage values ​​in the ancient capital of Hue is closely linked to the exploitation and promotion of heritage values ​​and creating conditions for the socio-economic development of the province and the Central region, with a focus on tourism and services.

At the Hue Imperial Citadel, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and her delegation enjoyed a drum performance and a reenactment of the Nguyen Dynasty's changing of the guard ceremony from the Ngu Phung Pavilion before proceeding inside to visit several sites within the Hue Imperial Palace. Afterwards, the delegation continued to visit An Dinh Palace and enjoyed an art performance at the Duyet Thi Duong Theater.
