(CLO) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has successfully undergone surgery to treat a brain hemorrhage related to a fall in October. This is just one of the many times the nearly 80-year-old leader has overcome serious illnesses.

The surgery was successful.

"The surgery was successful and went without complications" on Monday night, and President Lula "is recovering well and is being monitored" in the intensive care unit, the Syrian-Lebanon Hospital in Sao Paulo said in a statement.

The bleeding is linked to President Lula's fall on October 19th. The 79-year-old leader hit his head after falling in the bathroom at the presidential residence in the capital, Brasilia, and required multiple stitches.

The Syrian-Lebanon Hospital said President Lula was admitted to its Brasilia branch on Monday "for imaging tests after suffering from a headache." The tests revealed he had an intracranial hemorrhage.

The Brazilian leader was then "transferred to the Sao Paulo department of the Syria-Lebanon hospital, where he underwent craniotomy surgery to drain the blood clot."

President Lula had to cancel a planned trip to Russia this year to attend the BRICS Summit and the UN's COP29 climate conference due to the aforementioned health issues.

President Lula described his fall as "serious" at the time of the accident during a phone call with an official from his Workers' Party.

"I'm fine, I had an accident, but it was my fault. The accident was serious but didn't affect any sensitive areas," Lula said during the phone call. "I'm taking care of myself... The doctors said I have to wait at least three or four days to know the extent of the injuries from the fall."

Since then, President Lula's schedule has been packed, including presiding over the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro last month and hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Brasilia. Only now has he been able to find the time to undergo surgery.

Many times we have overcome illness.

President Lula frequently speaks of his good health and says he wants to "live to be 120 years old," despite having faced various health problems in the past.

He underwent a successful hip surgery in September 2023. The Brazilian president was also diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in 2011, and recovered the following year after undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

Mr. Lula, who led the country from 2003 to 2010, won another term after defeating then-far-right President Jair Bolsonaro in the October 2022 election following a difficult campaign.

He hasn't said whether he will run for re-election in 2026, only telling CNN last month, "I'll think about 2026 in 2026."

"It's not the youth who will solve the problems of world governance. What will solve the problems of world governance is the competence of the leaders, the mindset of the leaders, and their health," President Lula said.

"I would be ready to run again. But I hope it won't be necessary. And hopefully we will have other candidates who can bring about great political change in the country and in the world," the Brazilian leader added.
