The meeting took place at the Philippine presidential palace, after President Zelensky made a surprise appearance at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore over the weekend. This is Mr. Zelensky's second visit to Asia since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
This visit to Manila also marks President Zelensky's first visit to the Philippines since he took office in May 2019.

“Thank you for this invitation and we are very grateful to be in your country supporting Ukraine, our territorial integrity and sovereignty ,” Zelensky told Marcos. Zelensky also said that Ukraine would open an embassy in Manila this year.
Ukrainian President Zelensky also expressed his gratitude to President Marcos for Manila's participation in the summit in Switzerland on June 15-16 to bring peace to Ukraine.
For his part, President Marcos told President Zelensky that he was "honored" that the Ukrainian leader was visiting Manila. "It is a pleasure to meet, to discuss the common problems of both countries and hopefully we will find solutions for both," Mr. Marcos stressed.
Speaking on the final day of the Shangri-La Dialogue on June 2, Mr. Zelensky asked countries to support and participate in the upcoming peace summit in Switzerland.
However, Russia was not invited to the summit in Switzerland and China also confirmed it would not attend, according to Reuters.
President Zelensky has called on US President Joe Biden to attend the conference, but Washington has not confirmed who it will send.
