During his working trip to the US, on September 22, at the UN headquarters (New York, USA), President Luong Cuong met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
Vietnam is an active member of the United Nations.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that at the meeting, Mr. Guterres shared his assessment of the situation and multi-dimensional challenges facing the United Nations as well as the world. He expressed his wish that countries would strengthen cooperation to implement the commitments they have made, and shared the need to reform and improve the effectiveness of the United Nations' operations.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized his special affection and support for Vietnam, saying he was looking forward to his official visit in late October 2025.
Expressing his admiration for Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements and its growing position, Mr. Guterres said that Vietnam is a great partner that has been participating and actively contributing in all priority areas of the United Nations, especially in peacekeeping , sustainable development, climate change response, and equitable energy transition.
He affirmed that Vietnam is an active member of the UN and a pillar of today's multipolar world, so he believes that emerging economies, including Vietnam, need to have a more worthy voice, representation and role in the global governance system.
President expresses support for UN reform
For his part, President Luong Cuong affirmed that Vietnam believes in and supports multilateralism and the central role of the UN in global governance.
Sharing Mr. Guterres' assessment of the world situation, the President expressed his support for the UN reform process. He said that countries need to play a leading role in this process and discuss thoroughly to reform in a comprehensive and transparent manner.
The President affirmed that Vietnam is ready to welcome the United Nations to set up headquarters and offices in Vietnam.
Announcing that Vietnam has achieved many positive results and progress in socio-economic development, the President said that our country still needs support from the United Nations and international partners.
On that basis, he proposed that the UN increase technical support, train high-quality human resources, and mobilize resources for developing countries, including Vietnam, especially in accessing preferential climate finance, new-generation clean technology, and improving response capacity.
At the meeting, the two sides also agreed to continue to deepen the Vietnam-UN and ASEAN-UN relations in the coming time. The two leaders also emphasized the historical significance of opening the signing of the UN Convention against Cybercrime in Hanoi at the end of October 2025.
