Tottenham determined to demand justice for player who suffered racial discrimination

Tottenham were outraged by the racist abuse directed at Mathys Tel after their defeat in the European Super Cup early on August 14.

Despite being underestimated, Tottenham suddenly took a 2-0 lead from two set pieces by Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. The match then took place in a dramatic and tense atmosphere.

However, Tottenham could not maintain their advantage against the fierce attack from Luis Enrique's team. As a result, in less than 10 minutes (from the 85th minute), PSG equalized thanks to Lee Kang In and Goncalo Ramos.

After 90 minutes of tension on the field, both teams dragged each other into a penalty shootout. On the 11m mark, substitute striker Mathys Tel missed the penalty kick, helping PSG win the European Super Cup title.

After the match, the young French player received a lot of criticism from fans. Especially racist words on his social networks.

Tottenham defended the 20-year-old striker on their website, saying they were “disgusted” by the views of extremist fans and would take strong measures to stop these extremist fans.

“We are outraged by the racist abuse Mathys Tel received on social media following the UEFA Super Cup defeat.

Mathys showed courage and bravery in stepping up to take the penalty. His abusers are just cowards - hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to air their disgusting views.

We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individuals we may identify," Tottenham said on its website.

In early February 2025, Tel joined Tottenham on loan for the rest of the season. Before that, he spent two full seasons with Bayern Munich, making 60 appearances and scoring a total of 12 goals.
