At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, Nissan simultaneously unveiled two all-new SUV concept models. The company confirmed that both will be developed into production versions and are expected to launch next year.
More importantly, the company stated that at least one of these two models will not only be sold in China but also distributed in several global markets. Among them, the Terrano PHEV concept is the one attracting the most attention.
The name Terrano is not unfamiliar to car enthusiasts. Nissan previously used this name for a small SUV model sold from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. However, the new generation Terrano PHEV will be almost completely redesigned.
In terms of product positioning, this new SUV will be positioned between the Nissan Patrol and the Nissan X-Trail (also known as the Nissan Rogue in the US market), targeting customers who want a powerful, versatile SUV that isn't too bulky.
Although full specifications haven't been released, Nissan has confirmed that the Terrano PHEV uses a body-on-frame chassis designed for true off-road use. It's highly likely that this model will share its chassis platform with the Nissan Frontier Pro PHEV pickup truck, which is only sold in China and is developed and manufactured in partnership with Dongfeng.
If this is true, the Nissan Terrano PHEV will use a similar powertrain, consisting of a 1.5L four-cylinder gasoline engine combined with an electric motor, producing a combined output of 429 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque.
In terms of design, the Terrano PHEV concept has received many positive reviews, in contrast to the controversies surrounding some recent Nissan models. The car boasts a boxy, imposing shape, with a striking front end featuring modern LED headlights and an illuminated Nissan logo. These details serve both as brand recognition and create a high-tech feel.
Off-road capability is also clearly emphasized. The Terrano PHEV is equipped with a large skid plate, tow hooks, specialized off-road lighting, and a range of accessories such as underbody protection bars, roof rails, and square, black-painted wheel arches. At the rear, a large, externally mounted spare wheel sits on a large support, a feature usually only seen on pure off-road SUVs.

Alongside the Terrano PHEV, Nissan also introduced another concept, the Urban SUV PHEV, inspired by the NX8, targeting younger customers in China. This model boasts a modern design with digital rearview mirrors, hidden door handles, and LED headlights. However, Nissan has not yet announced long-term distribution plans for the Urban SUV PHEV.
Conversely, the company has confirmed that the commercial version of the Terrano PHEV will be sold in many markets outside of China. If this spirit is maintained when it goes into production, the Terrano PHEV could completely become Nissan's new strategic weapon to compete with its rival, the Toyota Land Cruiser, in the off-road SUV segment that is attracting a lot of customer attention.
