Exam schedule for 10th grade entrance exams in Ho Chi Minh City
According to the plan, the 2026 entrance exam for 10th grade in Ho Chi Minh City is expected to take place over two days, June 1st and 2nd. Candidates will take exams in three subjects: Mathematics, Literature (120 minutes per subject), and Foreign Language (90 minutes). Candidates wishing to specialize in a particular subject will take an additional exam in that subject, lasting 150 minutes.
This year, the number of students taking the 10th grade entrance exam increased by nearly 43,000 compared to last year. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training expects about 70% to pass, while the remaining nearly 51,000 students will have to choose other options.
Accordingly, this year, Ho Chi Minh City will organize the 10th grade entrance exam using both entrance exams and selection based on academic records. Entrance exams will be applied to public high schools, ensuring a balance between the number of registered candidates and the quota for each school. Selection based on academic records will be applied to private schools, vocational high schools, and some specialized schools as stipulated by regulations.
This is the first year that Ho Chi Minh City has organized the 10th grade entrance exam after the merger. Generally, most areas hold entrance exams, while some units apply a selection process, including Thanh An Secondary and High School (Thanh An commune), Vo Thi Sau High School (Con Dao special zone), and ethnic boarding schools, with the selection criteria being students studying at these units themselves or according to specific regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
For candidates applying for the entrance exam, the admission process is divided into two stages. In stage 1, students register three preferences to take the entrance exam for public high schools (excluding some specialized and unique schools).
Phase 2 is supplementary admissions, implemented depending on the actual enrollment situation and the needs of the schools. This phase targets candidates who took the entrance exam but were not admitted to any of their initial three choices. The Department of Education and Training may organize supplementary admissions to ensure the rights of students and fill any remaining vacancies.
Each exam is graded on a 10-point scale, rounded to the nearest 0.25, and weighted with a coefficient of 1. The admission score is the sum of the scores of the three exams plus any bonus or incentive points (if applicable). To be eligible for admission, candidates must participate in all three exams and not receive a score of 0 in any subject.
Candidates can register for a maximum of 3 preferences for public high schools, arranged in order of priority. Once admitted to a preferred school, candidates must enroll in that school and cannot change their choice.
According to the plan, junior high schools are responsible for advising students to choose schools that suit their abilities and family circumstances, prioritizing schools near their residences for convenient commuting.
The city's enrollment system will help calculate the distance from your residence (based on VNeID data) to the registered schools and issue a warning if the distance exceeds the specified limit. Specifically, the distance should not exceed 10 km for the Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong (before the merger) areas, and not exceed 13 km for the Ba Ria - Vung Tau area.
In cases where registration exceeds the permitted range, the school must work directly with parents, create a consultation record, and clearly inform them of the rule that they are not allowed to change their preferences after the adjustment deadline or after the admission results are announced.
Four groups of students were admitted directly.
Accordingly, the four categories of students eligible for direct admission must meet the general condition of having completed the lower secondary school program in the 2025-2026 school year in Ho Chi Minh City within the prescribed age range.
The following groups are eligible for direct admission: Students from ethnic minority groups with very small populations, as stipulated in Clause 1, Article 2 of Decree No. 57/2017/ND-CP; and students with disabilities.
In addition, junior high school students who win national-level awards organized by the Ministry of Education and Training or in coordination with other Ministries and ministerial-level agencies on a nationwide scale in competitions, examinations, and contests (hereinafter referred to as competitions) in culture, arts, sports; scientific and technical research competitions; and junior high school students who win awards in international competitions selected by the Minister of Education and Training are also eligible.
Ho Chi Minh City stipulates that junior high school students who win prizes in the National Science and Technology Competition for High School Students organized by the Ministry of Education and Training, or students who win international prizes in corresponding subjects within the National General Education Program, are allowed to register for direct admission to all high schools in Ho Chi Minh City (except specialized schools).
Students eligible for direct admission can register for high schools (excluding specialized schools and some special cases as guided by the Department of Education and Training). The school they register for must meet the following conditions: close to their current residence (based on the current residence in the VNeID of their parents or guardians) or close to their parents' or guardians' workplaces, suitable to the student's abilities and learning conditions, and compatible with the school's capacity to accommodate them.
The registration process, required documents, timeline, direct admission methods, and related regulations will follow the guidelines issued by the Department of Education and Training after the City's enrollment plan is announced.
The direct admissions council will review and evaluate the application dossiers and allocate students to high schools, prioritizing schools near their place of residence (according to VNeID information) or within the same ward, commune, or adjacent area to their place of residence, in order to create favorable conditions for the students.
Ho Chi Minh City notes that this regulation does not apply to students graduating from junior high school outside the 2025-2026 school year.
The assigned high school may differ from the initial application, depending on the enrollment quota and the capacity of the schools, in order to ensure the right to education and appropriate educational conditions.
