Southern Vietnam is entering a prolonged heatwave with temperatures commonly ranging from 35-37 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 37 degrees Celsius in some areas. The meteorological agency warns that many areas will continue to experience sweltering heat in the coming days.

According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, widespread heatwaves occurred in the Southern region this afternoon (May 10).

At 1 PM, temperatures were generally 35-36 degrees Celsius, with some areas exceeding 36 degrees Celsius. Nha Be (Ho Chi Minh City) and Ta Lai ( Dong Nai ) both recorded temperatures of 36.9 degrees Celsius. Humidity was generally 50-55%.

The meteorological agency warns that on May 11th and 12th, Southern Vietnam will continue to experience hot weather, with some areas experiencing intense heat. Maximum temperatures will generally range from 35-37 degrees Celsius, with some places exceeding 37 degrees Celsius. Minimum humidity will generally be between 50-55%.

Experts from the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting said that the heatwave in the Southern region (including Ho Chi Minh City) is likely to continue for the next few days, mainly from 10 am to 4 pm daily. After 4 pm or 5 pm, localized thunderstorms often occur in the Southern region.

The National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting also stated that saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta is expected to gradually decrease towards the end of this week. The depth of the 4‰ salinity boundary is currently around 25-42km. Specifically on the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay rivers, the extent of saltwater intrusion is 60-75km.

From May 11th to 20th, saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta gradually increased. The depth of the 4‰ salinity boundary was commonly 25-35km. On the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay rivers, it was 55-65km. The meteorological agency advised people to store freshwater during low tides for production and daily life.

In Northern Vietnam, on May 10th, mountainous and hilly areas experienced scattered showers, with some thunderstorms. The National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting warned that from the evening of May 10th to May 11th, the Northwest region and the northern mountainous areas will continue to experience scattered showers and thunderstorms with rainfall generally ranging from 10-30mm, and locally exceeding 80mm.
