'My heart is heavy'

"My heart is heavy announcing the passing of my beloved mother. Our family is deeply saddened by this loss. We appreciate all the condolences and sympathy during this difficult time," Coach Park Hang-seo shared the sad news on his personal page following the death of his beloved mother.

"During the funeral, I requested privacy for my family. We are very grateful for the concern and love from friends, colleagues, and fans. Thank you for everyone's encouragement," Mr. Park added.

After receiving this news, coach Park Hang-seo returned to South Korea to handle his mother's funeral arrangements.

Baek Soon-jung was born in Chukdong-myeon town, Sacheon-si city, Gyeongsangnam-do province. She married Park Rok, the father of coach Park Hang-seo, from Sancheong city in the same province. They had five children (four sons and one daughter), with Park Hang-seo being the youngest. Park was the one his mother loved and doted on the most.

While coaching the Vietnam U23 team, Mr. Park often took the opportunity to visit his family. In 2022, he returned to attend the 100th birthday celebration of his wife, Baek Soon-jung.

Coach Park Hang-seo once revealed: "My mother sent all her children to study in Seoul, to attend university despite our difficult family circumstances. Initially, my mother opened a small pharmacy. Later, as our tuition fees increased, she opened a restaurant and even worked as a salt trader. Thanks to my mother, I was able to go to Seoul and study football."

Coach Park's mother was interviewed by the Korean press six years ago when Coach Park Hang-seo and the Vietnam U23 team achieved a miracle, winning the runner-up title at the 2018 AFC U23 Championship. At that time, Coach Park Hang-seo's mother emotionally shared: "I have received many congratulations. I have a good son who plays football very well. I regret not being able to take care of him more when he was young. I really want to go to Vietnam to visit Park Hang-seo, my son."
