The match between Germany and Denmark in the Euro 2024 Round of 16 started at 2:00 AM on June 30th and only lasted 34 minutes. After that, referee Michael Oliver blew the whistle and ordered the players from both sides to leave the field.
Television footage showed heavy rain falling on Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund), accompanied by thunder and lightning. A few minutes later, hailstones began to fall.
The Euro 2024 organizers also issued a statement saying: "Due to adverse weather conditions (storms and heavy rain) in Dortmund, the match between Germany and Denmark in the Euro 2024 Round of 16 has been postponed. UEFA will make an announcement regarding the resumption of the match based on the actual situation."
Meanwhile, BBC journalist Gary Rose updated the situation, saying: "The thunder rumbled, frightening many people on the pitch. Heavy rain also poured down."
Even though the players, coaching staff, and referees had to leave the field, the stands were still filled with a festive atmosphere. The cheers of fans from both teams continued despite their attempts to find shelter from the rain. Two Danish fans even joined in the fun with a humorous rain shower.
Before the first half was temporarily suspended, the home team Germany had a very exciting start. They played offensively, constantly pressing and soon scored against Denmark, but the goal was disallowed.
Subsequently, opportunities arose for Joshua Kimmich, Kai Havertz, and others, but goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel made outstanding saves to keep a clean sheet.
At the time the match was suspended, Denmark had just regained control of the game and were playing better. After about 25 minutes, both teams returned to the field to warm up and the match resumed from the 35th minute.
