Preschool children in England have dropped sharply.

GD&TĐ - The number of children enrolling in kindergarten in London, England, is declining sharply, reflecting the pressure of rising living costs and population changes in the capital.

According to the latest enrollment figures from England and Wales, London alone is expected to have nearly 3,000 fewer four-year-olds enrolling in school by September 2026, representing a 3.5% decrease compared to the previous year.

Jon Abbey, Chairman of the London Admissions Council, commented: “The declining birth rate and the pressure of living costs, particularly high housing prices, continue to drive down the number of applications. This trend could continue for several years to come.”

The cost of housing in London has driven many young families away from the city center, leading to a decline in the number of school-aged children. While around 88% of parents still manage to find their desired school, disparities between boroughs are evident, reflecting increasing demographic stratification.

Forecasts indicate that over the next four years, the number of kindergarten students in London could decrease by a further 2.5%, equivalent to 87 classrooms. This places significant pressure on the finances of schools, which depend on student numbers for funding.

Antonia Jennings, Chief Executive of the Centre for London, warned: “The decline in student numbers means cuts in funding. In the last five years, 90 schools have closed or merged. More and more children are living in poverty, lacking food or stable housing, which puts increasing pressure on teachers and the British education system.”
