The national flag is a sacred symbol of the nation and people. People hang the national flag to show their patriotism and national pride, so the flag needs to be placed in a dignified and appropriate position.
From the idea of "turning every roof into a national flag" on social networks, many people have painted the national flag on their doors and walls to celebrate National Day September 2.
This action comes from patriotism and national pride, but according to many cultural experts, people need to be careful when drawing the national flag to ensure the solemnity of the national flag.
In recent days, social networks have been flooded with images of people drawing and painting the national flag on walls, doors, and roofs across the country.
It is known that this trend originated from Le Quang Vu - a TikToker in Vinh Phuc , and became popular since the beginning of August.
Seeing the red corrugated iron roof, Le Quang Vu came up with the idea of drawing a five-pointed yellow star on top, creating the shape of a national flag with an area of 150 square meters. With the help of a friend, Vu completed this work in one day by measuring, calculating on the computer and using a flycam to align the angle so that the image of the star is neat and beautiful.
After completing the flag, the 29-year-old man filmed a video and posted it on social media, unexpectedly receiving 2.8 million views and more than 100,000 likes and comments in a short time.
Sharing with the press, Vu said: “I did not think that my work would receive such widespread support from everyone. My only wish is to spread love for my homeland to the community and prove that the patriotism of every Vietnamese person is immortal.”
Some other young people also created flags on their roofs and shared them on social media, creating a wave of “painting the national flag on the roof” that spread across Vietnam. Many people even painted flags on roof tiles and rolling doors.
We need to respect the national flag.
This trend is a way for young people and people across the country to express their patriotism and national pride. However, many people are worried that people may paint the flag incorrectly, the yellow star is painted upside down, or the national flag is painted in inappropriate places. Using poor quality paint can also pollute the environment and affect public health. Moreover, over time, these “flags” will fade, become damaged, and distort the image of the national flag.
People climbing on roofs to paint and draw flags also poses a risk of accidents because corrugated iron roofs are slippery, steep and high.
Another issue that worries many cultural experts is that people stand, sit, and lie on the “flag” to take pictures and show off their achievements on social media. This is considered disrespectful to the national flag and affects the solemnity of the national symbol.
Discussing this issue with reporters of VietnamPlus Electronic Newspaper, Professor-Doctor Trinh Quang Phu, author of many books about President Ho Chi Minh , said that in the past, the National Flag was often hung, but now people paint and draw to show their patriotism, which is commendable, but it must be ensured that the sacred image of the National Flag is placed in a solemn, high, clean place.
“There are many ways to show patriotism. People can paint or draw flags, but they must choose a solemn position to ensure the dignity of the national flag,” said Mr. Phu.
Associate Professor - Doctor of Science Pham Mai Hung, Vice President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, agreed with that view, emphasizing that the National Flag is used to hang on solemn occasions and anniversaries and needs to be hung in a solemn place.
“Where I live, the Ward People’s Committee gives each family a national flag to hang on special occasions. Of course, people will choose the most worthy, visible and solemn place, such as right in front of their house, to hang it. This is a good thing, a beautiful tradition,” Mr. Hung said.
Mr. Hung emphasized that hanging the national flag must come from patriotism and national pride, and once hung, people must have awareness and responsibility to protect the national flag.
“In my opinion, we hang the flag out of civic responsibility, not because of a movement. If done well, hanging the flag will contribute to creating awareness of important events of the country, arousing pride in the young generation that we are responsible for training and nurturing,” he said.
Mr. Hung believes that the national flag should not be painted in a fixed position in the family area because the national flag and national anthem are often associated with a specific event or anniversary and should not be displayed at all times.
As a young person, musician Quach Beem believes that painting flags on doors, roofs, and walls of houses is a popular trend on social networks, and “trend” is a short-term emotion that does not bring long-term effectiveness. Looking at a large flag painted on the roof may be very beautiful when it is first completed, but over time, it is uncertain that people can keep the sacred image of the national flag intact.
“Quach Beem, like everyone else, always wants to express patriotism in the most correct and best way. We need to ensure respect and solemnity for the national flag, and should express patriotism through meaningful, long-term actions,” the musician shared.
