He gave an example in war, if a battalion commander fails, it can affect 500 people. If a division commander fails, it can affect 10,000 people. If a corps commander like his father - Major General Hoang Dan, fails, it will affect tens of thousands of people. " So, as a leader, remember not to fail. Of course, failure always happens, but you must always have that mindset. My father said that when you go to war, sacrifice is natural. But if you keep thinking about sacrifice, life and death, you will definitely not be able to do anything. We must temporarily forget, think about the higher goal and the assigned mission to do." " In the past, losses were blood and bones. Now, they are the efforts, sweat, intelligence, and even the family happiness of your employees. Therefore, when making decisions, leaders must foresee, premonition, and evaluate," said Mr. Tien. However, the Chairman of FPT Telecom admitted that he had experienced failure many times, both in his personal life, study, and business. A well-known story is that although he was the class monitor of the specialized Math class at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, he failed the university entrance exam. " In business, we are not always successful. Actually, I remember when I joined FPT, out of 10 things I did, only 5 were successful," he recounted. Regarding this issue, Mr. Tien shared that every time he fails, he always thinks of positive lessons, trying to practice the habit of positive thinking in all circumstances. Besides, he thinks that we should actually learn lessons from those who fail. " If you learn, you should learn from those who fail. Success has no common denominator. Learning from successful people is very difficult, but learning how to avoid failure is possible," he said. Mr. Tien also mentioned the leadership story at FPT Corporation. In 1998, FPT Chairman Truong Gia Binh held a conference to present his determination to export software. " At that time, that story was very strange. In the world at that time, there was only India and this country had just started doing it. At FPT, we always knew that Chairman Truong Gia Binh was a dreamer, always had even unrealistic dreams," he recalled. " But with our experience, the strange thing is that every time Mr. Binh's dreams, which can be said to be unrealistic, come true. We are determined to believe that even though based on all the analysis of strengths and weaknesses, we have no chance of going abroad. Now, in just a few months, FPT will have more than 30,000 people to do the software export that we planned in 1998," said Mr. Tien.
