According to the Daily Star , last week North Korea closed its embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and announced that its diplomatic mission in India would take over related duties.
The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1973. North Korea sent four diplomats, including an ambassador, to its embassy in Bangladesh.
NK News , a website specializing in North Korea, reported that Pyongyang is also preparing to close its embassy in Congo.
According to NK News , North Korea did not give a reason for closing its embassy, and its diplomatic mission in Ethiopia will take over.
Since establishing diplomatic relations with Congo in 1964, North Korea has maintained close ties with the African nation, primarily through arms exports and gold mining, according to Yonhap .
The embassies in Bangladesh and Congo are the latest in a list of overseas diplomatic missions that Pyongyang has closed in recent months, which also included those in Angola, Hong Kong, Nepal, Spain, and Uganda. North Korea says the closures are part of an effort to improve the effectiveness of its diplomacy.
Earlier this month, North Korea announced it would close and open new diplomatic missions "in line with the changing global environment and national foreign policy," but did not specify which countries would be affected.
