On March 10, North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles toward the Yellow Sea at a time when the United States and South Korea were conducting their annual military exercises.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced the detection of a launch in an area near Hwangju County, North Hwanghae Province (North Korea) at approximately 1:15 PM on March 10. The South Korean military added that Pyongyang may have launched a short-range ballistic missile (CRBM), a weapon with a range of less than 300 km, Yonhap reported.
JCS said it has stepped up surveillance and is fully vigilant, while working closely with the U.S.
North Korea tested a strategic ballistic missile in May 2024.
The South Korean and U.S. militaries began their annual exercise, codename Freedom Shield, starting on March 10 and lasting 11 days. North Korea has long condemned joint military exercises between South Korea and its ally.
North Korea often responds to these exercises with missile tests. Pyongyang declares that Seoul and Washington will have to "pay a heavy price" for their dangerous provocations.
On March 10, North Korea's Foreign Ministry condemned the military exercises, saying they would lead to a serious security crisis. South Korea and the United States refuted this claim, stating that the exercises were purely defensive in nature.

March 10th marks the first time North Korea has test-fired a ballistic missile since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House. Pyongyang had previously launched several short-range ballistic missiles on January 14th. More recently, North Korea launched a strategic cruise missile on February 26th.
