From historical sites to vivid lessons

The Cu Chi Tunnels, a symbol of Vietnam’s strength in the resistance war against American imperialism, have become a source of inspiration for many unique initiatives. From interdisciplinary applied learning models (STEM) to “virtual museums” in online games, the younger generation is continuing the tradition and national pride in the way of their time.

Located in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi Tunnels today is a historical and cultural relic of special importance, and is also a destination that attracts many domestic and international tourists.

Application of technology in historyeducation

With a total length of up to 250km, fully functional for defense and combat, created entirely by human power from primitive tools, Cu Chi Tunnels reflected the intelligence and bravery of our army and people, contributing to glorious feats of arms.

One of the outstanding products of the youth in honoring the Tunnels is the "Cu Chi Tunnels Model" by a group of students from Cau Giay Secondary School (Hanoi), which won a special prize at the 20th National Youth and Children's Creativity Contest - 2024 organized by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training , and the Ministry of Science and Technology. The model was initiated and implemented by a group of 5 students in grades 8 and 9, namely Luu Bao Chau, Nguyen Duy Kien, Nguyen Lam Uyen, Le Ngoc Khai Vy, and Nguyen Thanh Mai.

The highlight of the product is the combination of traditional and modern elements: the robot soldiers and militia are molded from clay; while the activities are designed and operated with technologies such as sensors, automation, solar batteries, etc. The robot characters can move according to the video script to navigate viewers to locations in the tunnel. The LED lights in the introduced area also light up, creating eye-catching effects, bringing a visual experience.

The model also integrates QR codes to help students and visitors learn more historical information about each point in the tunnel, from weapon storage, food storage, medical area... to combat tactics used during the resistance period.

The group of students also created a three-level historical Q&A game, providing knowledge about the Cu Chi Tunnels in an interesting and lively way. All information content is written in Vietnamese and English, with audio recordings, information lookups, interactive videos... helping students have a new experience when learning history as well as providing the ability to reach an international audience.

According to the Jury, the model has the potential to become a useful practical teaching tool, suitable for teachers and students of all levels in teaching and learning about an important historical relic of the country. Group representative, Luu Bao Chau shared that in the coming time, the group will continue to develop more features, adding more popular languages, such as Chinese, Russian, French, Spanish, Korean. They also plan to create more models to introduce Vinh Moc Tunnels (Quang Tri).

"Drawing" a map of the tunnels in digital space

In addition to creativity in traditional education, digital technology is also a powerful tool to help young people access and honor the historical values of the nation. Another special project about Cu Chi Tunnels is the recreation of this legendary military structure in Mini World - an online game for players aged 9 and above.

Launched on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), the map "Cu Chi Tunnels - Following the Dawn" quickly attracted tens of thousands of visits and enthusiastic comments from the gaming community, showing the appeal and strong interest of young people in creations that are both entertaining and educational, arousing national pride and spirit.

The programming team, Mini-Dev, including Nguyen Tuan Tien (born in 1994), Truong Giang (born in 2006), Hoang Nhan (born in 2011) and Mini Ca (born in 2007), spent about three weeks researching and reconstructing the Cu Chi Tunnels in the game environment. To ensure that the details in the map were close to reality, the team shared references from many sources of documents as well as historical sites. Team leader Nguyen Tuan Tien said that the idea of creating the Cu Chi Tunnels in Mini World was born from the powerful effects of the movie "Tunnels - Sun in the Dark".

The group hopes that young people who have not had the opportunity to visit Cu Chi Tunnels, or are not old enough to watch the movie "Tunnels", will also know and feel a unique place containing many miracles. As an online game, the map integrates many interactive tasks such as completing the journey, answering historical questions, searching for items... so that players can experience and remember history in a natural and interesting way. After finishing "Cu Chi Tunnels", the character in the game will move on to a new map showing other cultural works and scenic spots in Vietnam, also built by Mini-Dev. That is the humane message from the GenZ author group: after the darkness of war will be the light of peace, where beautiful rivers and mountains are developing every day and continue to open new pages of history.

Through the above projects, we can see the rich and flexible creativity of Vietnamese youth in connecting the past and present, promoting the nation's precious heritage through the lens of technology. With authentic and attractive "learning programs" beyond textbooks, the value of Cu Chi Tunnels in particular and historical relics and sites in general have been and are being preserved and spread to the future, from Vietnam to the world.
