Vietnamese has many interesting words, where a single word can have multiple meanings depending on the context. Among them is a word that refers to a familiar dish and also functions as a verb describing a common action in daily life.
That's the word "roll".
According to the Vietnamese Dictionary (Hoang Phe Dictionary) , "to roll" refers to the action of compressing a flat object into a cylindrical shape by rolling it on itself. Examples: Rolling up a mat, rolling up a sail... This word also refers to pulling or carrying something along with a fast and strong movement. Examples: Houses swept away by floodwaters; a car speeding by kicks up a cloud of dust.
Besides being a verb, "to roll" is also used to refer to a dish in Vietnamese cuisine . Commonly, rolls are dishes made by wrapping a filling in rice paper, leaves, or other materials, then rolling them into small rolls. Some familiar examples include spring rolls, pho rolls, nem rolls, and beef rolls wrapped in betel leaves.
The name comes primarily from the cooking process – the act of "wrapping" the ingredients together.
