The "Xoan Festival" event is part of the "Sounds of the Ancestral Land" media project, aiming to bring Xoan singing—a long-standing traditional folk art form of Phu Tho province—closer to young people through hands-on activities. Xoan singing (also known as temple singing) is a ritualistic form of singing, worshipping deities and the village tutelary god, seamlessly combining music , singing, and dancing, and has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Taking place from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, "Xoan Opening Festival" transformed a corner of the Hanoi Museum into a vibrant, traditional festival space. Right from the entrance, the organizers cleverly incorporated an exhibition space showcasing documents, images, costumes, and performance props. Here, visitors had the opportunity to learn more about the origins, meaning, and stages of ancient Xoan singing.

The main highlight of the event was the Xoan singing performances by artisans from An Thai Xoan Ward ( Phu Tho province ). Notably, the program featured People's Artist Nguyen Thi Lich – the leading female artist of An Thai Xoan Ward.
Beyond simply enjoying the singing and dancing, the audience also had the opportunity to directly immerse themselves in this art form through highly interactive performances such as "Lullaby for Wine Offering" and "Fishing with a Catch ." The highlight of the program was the live interaction session, where young people received dedicated guidance from People's Artist Nguyen Thi Lich on each dance step, how to play the clappers, and how to experience traditional musical instruments.

Speaking at the event, People's Artist Nguyen Thi Lich emotionally shared: "I feel very happy to witness young people's love and acceptance of this art form. This art form is a heritage representing humanity, and we have the right to be proud of it. Today, I also had the opportunity to directly teach and witness a program created by the students themselves, and I find it absolutely wonderful."

In addition to performances and interactions with artisans, experiential activities also attracted audience interest, such as the "Bamboo Clappers Tell Stories" workshop, where guests could personally decorate bamboo clappers – musical instruments used in Xoan singing – with their own colors and creativity.

Young people create their own clappers.
Or there's the "Lucky Xoan Fortune Telling" area where audience members can personally cast their own fortune slips, based on Xoan folk songs, providing entertainment and spreading positive energy.

The success of "Xoan Opening Ceremony" shows that traditional heritage can absolutely touch the hearts of young people if it is conveyed with a fresh and relatable mindset.
Sharing her experience at the event, Do Ngoc Viet Anh (a second-year student majoring in Political Economy at the Academy of Journalism and Communication) excitedly said: "After the experience, what impressed me most was the opportunity to directly interact culturally with the artisans. I even got to try performing for everyone, and through that, I clearly felt the delicate beauty of Xoan singing, from the lyrics to the gestures. This was truly an unforgettable experience."
Representing the organizing committee, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang (Head of the event organizing committee) expressed her pride that the "Sounds of the Ancestral Land" project has initially fulfilled its mission of bridging cultural gaps. The event was not just a weekend entertainment event, but it truly awakened pride, love for heritage, and the desire to preserve the nation's fine traditional values in the hearts of today's young generation.
The "Xoan Festival" event demonstrates that traditional cultural heritage can be fully accessible to the younger generation through appropriate methods of transmission. The combination of hands-on experience, direct interaction, and new approaches is opening up more opportunities for national cultural values to continue to be preserved and disseminated in modern life.
