From minor conflicts to legal troubles.

In everyday life, minor conflicts are unavoidable, but many people choose to resolve them through violence instead of compromise. In a moment of impulsiveness and lack of emotional control, they turn a conflict into a brawl, and the price they pay is long years behind bars.

Small conflict, big consequences.

On the evening of April 28, 2018, due to a romantic conflict involving his sister, HTP and his friend went to a coffee shop to meet LTPh (born in 1990) and LTD (born in 1986, both residing in Tuy Hoa City) with the intention of "reconciling." However, during the conversation, an argument ensued, leading to a challenge to fight. Ph, D, and two other friends then attacked P with knives, glass cups, bricks, and stones, causing P to suffer 56% injuries.

Another case occurred on the evening of March 10, 2024, stemming from a suspected phone theft that led to an altercation involving a knife. A text message, a knife hidden in the corner of the room, and both father and son having troubled pasts—all contributed to the tragedy. When HTTr (born in 1977) and his son HTTh (born in 2001, both residing in Tuy Hoa City) stabbed and slashed the victim, causing 61% injury, they may not have imagined that just minutes after that outburst of rage, they would face murder charges and long days behind bars.

Commenting on these cases, a lay judge participating in the trials shared: "If the defendants had chosen to resolve the situation calmly instead of reacting instinctively, impulsively, and resorting to violence, the consequences would not have been so serious."

These two cases are separate tragedies, but both lead to a heartbreaking outcome: a moment of lost control can cost lives. Those involved chose violence over reason, and the price they paid was too high. The lessons to ponder extend beyond the legal verdicts to include the life lessons: everyone needs to learn to control their emotions and restrain their anger to avoid hurting others and ruining their own lives.

In the case of LTPh and LTD, an apology and a handshake would have been enough to resolve the conflict. In the case of father and son HTTr and HTTh, if the father had chosen to call the police, he probably wouldn't have had to witness his son and himself being handcuffed.

The representative of the prosecution at the trial stated: "Human life and health are among the fundamental and inviolable rights, recognized and protected by law. Therefore, any person with full criminal responsibility who commits an unlawful act against the physical integrity of another person, and whose actions result in consequences defined as crimes by the Criminal Code, must be severely punished according to the law."

In the end, the defendants LTPh was sentenced to 8 years in prison, LTD to 3 years, HTTr to 9 years, and HTTh's son to 7 years, clearly demonstrating the severity of the law. But what troubled those in attendance most was that the defendants' faces no longer showed aggression, only belated remorse.

When violence becomes a reflex

According to the Provincial People's Procuracy, recently there have been many murder cases of a particularly serious nature, stemming from very minor conflicts in daily life. Alarmingly, many perpetrators have used dangerous weapons, attacking vital areas of the victim's body, demonstrating recklessness and a disregard for the life and health of others. These actions not only cause serious consequences for the victims but also significantly impact social order and security in the locality.

Particularly for defendants with prior criminal records or administrative penalties for illegal drug use, these downward spirals are not stopped by education or intervention from family or community. When conflicts arise, they often choose to resolve them through thuggish behavior.

Those who "resolve conflicts" through violence often fail to consider the legal consequences. They don't foresee that their actions in a fit of anger could lead to criminal prosecution for murder.

The lessons from these two cases are not only for those involved. They also serve as a reminder to everyone in society, especially young people, to learn to control their emotions and to understand that violence is never the solution. These trials also further emphasize the crucial role of family and community education in preventing crime at its root.
