Today's USD exchange rate worldwide
The US dollar hit a six-week high against the euro on Tuesday, as investors focused on the possibility of the Federal Reserve shifting to a more hawkish policy to curb inflation fueled by rising energy prices, while uncertainty surrounding the prospect of a Middle East peace deal also weighed on market sentiment.
The US dollar surged in March after Iran nearly blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, causing oil prices to skyrocket, putting pressure on energy-import-dependent economies like Japan and the eurozone, and increasing demand for USD as a safe-haven asset.
Currently, the US dollar is also supported by rising bond yields, stemming from inflation concerns and uncertainty about how the new Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh will respond if price pressures continue to mount.
Eric Theoret, a foreign exchange strategist at Scotiabank, commented: “The market is now returning to the fundamentals, which is how inflation is unfolding, how that impacts the bond market, and what position the Fed will be in.” According to Theoret, traders are also expecting Europe and the UK to ease their aggressive monetary tightening measures, which would further support the US dollar.
The sell-off in U.S. Treasury bonds continued on Tuesday, pushing 30-year yields to their highest level since 2007. Traders now assess a 50% chance that the U.S. central bank will raise interest rates in December, although many analysts believe this is unlikely. A Reuters survey showed that a majority of economists have pushed back their forecasts of interest rate cuts until next year, expecting the current wave of inflation to be only temporary.
The euro fell 0.41% to 1.1607 USD/EUR, while the British pound lost 0.25% to 1.3399 USD.
The Japanese yen fell 0.13% to 159 yen/USD. Data released today showed that the Japanese economy grew faster than expected in the first quarter, reinforcing expectations that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) will raise interest rates in June.
The market is also awaiting further details on the Japanese government 's supplemental budget plan, which could further strain the country's already weakened public finances and put pressure on the yen. Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said Tokyo is prepared to act to address excessive currency market volatility, while assuring that any intervention to support the yen would not increase U.S. Treasury yields.
