Today's USD exchange rate worldwide
The US dollar edged higher against most major currencies on Thursday as investors weighed the prospects for a de-escalation of the conflict between Iran and the US. According to sources and officials involved, the US and Iran are nearing a temporary agreement to end the conflict. A draft framework is expected to help halt fighting, but it leaves many of the most contentious issues open.
However, market sentiment was somewhat affected on Thursday after the Wall Street Journal reported that Iran would not accept what Tehran considered an “unrealistic” US plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. About one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas is typically transported through this strait.
The euro was virtually unchanged for the day at $1.1748, while the British pound fell 0.1% to $1.35785.
Marc Chandler, chief strategist at Bannockburn Forex, commented: "I think the market is still in a state of tension."
He added that the market had previously leaned heavily toward the possibility of "peace being reached soon," but during North American trading, investors became more cautious about the prospect of a swift resolution of the conflict.
The Japanese yen fell about 0.3% against the dollar, a day after surging amid market speculation that Japanese authorities would continue to intervene to support the domestic currency. The dollar traded at 156.79 yen.
Data from the Bank of Japan suggests Tokyo may have spent as much as 5.01 trillion yen (equivalent to $32.06 billion) in its latest effort to support the weakening yen, indicating the possibility of multiple consecutive interventions in the market. Japan's top currency diplomat , Atsushi Mimura, also stated that the country is not restricted in its ability to intervene in the foreign exchange market.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae next week. The Nikkei newspaper reports that the two sides will discuss curbing speculative short selling of the yen, among other issues. However, experts remain cautious about the yen's outlook.
Masahiko Loo, senior fixed asset strategist at State Street Investment Management, believes that if the Bank of Japan (BOJ) does not continue to raise interest rates to address its lagging monetary policy, the yen is likely to remain weak in the short term.
The Norwegian crown appreciated after the central bank raised its benchmark interest rate from 4% to 4.25%, citing persistently high inflation. The US dollar briefly fell to a four-year low before recovering and trading relatively flat at 9.293 crowns.
The Australian dollar, which is sensitive to risk, fell 0.2% to 0.7222 USD.
Meanwhile, the Swedish crown fell by about 0.2%, to 9.2508 crowns/USD, after the Swedish central bank said the risk of conflict in Iran could lead to higher inflation, although it kept interest rates unchanged at 1.75% as expected.
