According to Reuters, in the currency market, the US dollar traded within a narrow range and is heading towards its sharpest annual decline since 2017, as investors assess the likelihood of the Federal Reserve (Fed) continuing to ease monetary policy in 2026.

Currency traders continue to closely monitor the Japanese yen amid concerns about the possibility of intervention in the market by Japanese authorities.

The movement of the USD was influenced by newly released economic data. Specifically, initial jobless claims in the US fell 4.5% last week, lower than expected. However, the number of people continuing to receive unemployment benefits increased by 2%, to 1.923 million, reflecting signs of weakening in the labor market. This development is consistent with recent surveys showing declining consumer job confidence, thus reinforcing expectations that the Fed will continue to cut interest rates in the near future.

Specifically, the Dow Jones rose 289.40 points (0.60%) to 48,731 points; the S&P 500 increased 22.34 points (0.32%) to 6,932 points; and the Nasdaq Composite gained 51.46 points (0.22%) to 23,613 points.

According to Cardillo, 2025 will be a favorable year for financial markets: “ It’s been a very positive year for equities, not only in the US but globally. At the same time, precious metals have also experienced a particularly strong year .”

In Europe, exchanges closed early due to holidays. European stocks ended the trading week near historical highs, setting the stage for their strongest year of growth since 2021, amid a trend toward lower interest rates.
