UEFA has confirmed it is investigating the racist abuse directed at Vinicius. |
UEFA is investigating the incident where Vinicius was called a 'monkey'.
UEFA has launched an investigation after Vinicius accused Benfica players of racist abuse during Real Madrid's victory in the first leg of the Champions League play-off on the morning of February 18th.
At the Da Luz stadium, Vinicius scored the only goal to give Real Madrid a narrow victory. After scoring, the Brazilian striker received a yellow card for what was deemed an overly enthusiastic celebration. A few minutes later, Vinicius unexpectedly ran to referee Francois Letexier to protest.
The Real Madrid star accused Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni of making racist remarks. Television cameras captured Prestianni pulling his shirt over his mouth during the argument. Referee Letexier immediately activated UEFA's anti-racism procedure, causing a 10-minute interruption to the match.
After the match, Kylian Mbappe said he heard Prestonni use the word "monkey" five times. The Argentinian player denied the accusation, asserting that he did not use such language.
In light of the escalating tensions, UEFA issued an official statement. The European football governing body stated that reports related to the match are being reviewed.
"Official match reports are being reviewed. Once information is available, disciplinary proceedings will be initiated, and if a penalty is imposed, the decision will be published on UEFA's disciplinary page," the statement said.
UEFA also stated that it currently has no further information and declined to comment further at this time.
The incident has once again raised concerns about racism in European football. The final conclusion will depend on the investigation and the evidence gathered from the referee's report and the match's video recordings.
