Speaking in an interview broadcast on CBS's Face the Nation on May 31, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine needs to use the current time to seek diplomatic opportunities. "We have this time before winter… and we need to find a way – a diplomatic way – to sit down and have a dialogue."
According to the Ukrainian president, the possibility of achieving diplomatic progress depends on the level of pressure exerted on Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian leader stated that future negotiations could be held with European support or in the form of bilateral dialogue with Russia.
Negotiations brokered by the US aimed at reaching a peace agreement have stalled as Washington shifted its attention to the conflict in Iran.
Earlier, in an interview with Reuters last week, a senior Ukrainian military commander stated that Kyiv had "a six-month window of opportunity" to regain the initiative on the battlefield and consolidate its position ahead of peace negotiations.
In an interview with CBS, Zelensky also emphasized the urgent need for US air defense support while Europe is still developing its own missile defense system. "Until we build our own European ballistic missile defense system, we will still need support from the United States," he said.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian president stated that Kyiv is hoping to reach an agreement with Washington on drone technology cooperation. According to him, Ukraine currently has an advantage in terms of combat experience after five years of dealing with Russian drone and missile attacks.
“We have signed drone agreements with several Middle Eastern countries and some European countries. We are currently preparing a major UAV agreement with the European Union and hope to have similar decisions with our American partners. I have high expectations for that,” Zelensky said.
