Applications of electrophysiological monitoring in neurosurgery.

115 People's Hospital has successfully applied an electrophysiological monitoring system in neurosurgery on two patients with the support of Dr. Gulaev Evgeny, Ivanovo Institute of Neurology (Russian Federation).

The first case involves a 62-year-old female patient from Ba Ria - Vung Tau province who suffered from hemifacial spasms for eight years, despite undergoing various treatments without success. At People's Hospital 115, the patient underwent successful surgery for hemifacial spasms with the assistance of intraoperative electrophysiology. Immediately after regaining consciousness, the left-sided hemifacial spasm completely disappeared, and post-operative follow-up showed no complications.

The second case involves a 63-year-old male patient from Dong Nai province who, two years ago, underwent spinal screw fixation surgery to treat multi-level spinal stenosis from the lumbar L3 to sacral S1 at a previous hospital. The surgeons utilized Neuronavigation Brain Lab for the procedure, combined with intraoperative electrophysiological stimulation. Immediately after surgery, the patient experienced significant improvement in pain and numbness in both legs, was able to walk, and continued with supplementary physical therapy.

According to Dr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Head of the Neurosurgery Department at People's Hospital 115, neurophysiological monitoring techniques during surgery are widely used worldwide , but are not yet common in Vietnam.

This new technique helps protect patients from nerve damage, reduces the risk of surgical complications, and improves postoperative outcomes by providing complete control over the central and peripheral nervous systems throughout the operation.
