Prompt response to the oil rig fire incident at the Song Doc oil field.

On May 22, the Vietnam Petroleum Operating Company (PVEP POC) announced that the fire that occurred at the Song Doc oil rig (off the southwest coast of Vietnam) on the afternoon of May 21 had been brought under control in time, causing no casualties and having no impact on the marine environment.

Prompt response to the oil rig fire incident at the Song Doc oil field.

The fire occurred at 5:06 PM on May 21st during the cleanup and dismantling of the mine – part of Vietnam's first mine closure project, marking a transition from exploitation to marine environmental restoration.

At the time of the incident, 15 workers were on the WHP-SDA drilling rig. The fire was completely extinguished after about 30 minutes. There were no casualties, and there was no impact on the marine environment or on drilling operations at other fields.

The Song Doc oil field ceased operations in February 2024 due to depleted reserves and is currently undergoing decommissioning as per the approved plan. PVEP POC is currently coordinating with relevant units to clarify the cause of the incident.
