The fire broke out at 5:06 p.m. on May 21 during the mine clearance and dismantling process – part of the first mine closure project of the Vietnamese oil and gas industry, marking the transition from exploitation to marine environmental restoration.
At the time of the incident, there were 15 workers on the WHP-SDA rig. The fire was completely extinguished after about 30 minutes. There were no casualties, no impact on the marine environment or mining activities at other mines.

Song Doc mine has stopped exploitation since February 2024 due to depleted reserves and is in the cleanup phase according to the approved plan. Currently, PVEP POC is coordinating with relevant units to clarify the cause of the incident.
