The fire occurred at 5:06 PM on May 21st during the cleanup and dismantling of the mine – part of Vietnam's first mine closure project, marking a transition from exploitation to marine environmental restoration.
At the time of the incident, 15 workers were on the WHP-SDA drilling rig. The fire was completely extinguished after about 30 minutes. There were no casualties, and there was no impact on the marine environment or on drilling operations at other fields.

The Song Doc oil field ceased operations in February 2024 due to depleted reserves and is currently undergoing decommissioning as per the approved plan. PVEP POC is currently coordinating with relevant units to clarify the cause of the incident.
