In a statement released on May 4, Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke out about the incident on May 3 when two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) crashed into the Kremlin and exploded.
"Russia has accused Ukraine of attacking the Kremlin with armed drones. Imagine how we would react if a Russian-backed force launched a drone at the Capitol. We must immediately stop actions that escalate the conflict," Kennedy wrote on his personal Twitter page.
Candidate Kennedy also recalled the efforts of his uncle, the late President John F. Kennedy, to prevent nuclear war with the Soviet Union.
"Shortly after defusing the Cuban missile crisis, President Kennedy advised us never to force the Russians to choose between saving our nation's face and waging a nuclear war. This advice must be heeded," Mr. Kennedy stressed.
Mr. Robert Kennedy Jr., 69 years old, son of former US Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and grandson of the late President John F. Kennedy, announced his plan to run for US President on April 19 at an event held in Massachusetts.
"I am here to announce my decision to run for president of the United States as the Democratic candidate," Mr. Kennedy declared, affirming that he would "end the political division in America by telling the truth to the people."
Before announcing his presidential campaign, Robert Kennedy Jr. was a lawyer and environmental activist. His entry into the Democratic presidential primary marked the return of the Kennedy family, one of the most influential families in American politics.
On the evening of May 3 local time, two UAVs exploded after crashing into the Kremlin, the headquarters of the Russian government and the residence of President Vladimir Putin. The Russian President's office later accused Ukraine of conducting a raid on the Kremlin with the aim of assassinating Mr. Putin.
Immediately after the attack on the Kremlin, many high-ranking Russian officials, including Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin and Deputy Chairman of the Federal Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, called on the country's military to carry out retaliatory attacks against Ukraine.
On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is on a tour of European countries, has rejected all of Russia's accusations against Ukraine.
"We are not attacking Mr. Putin or Mr. Moscow. We are only fighting for our territory. You know, we do not have enough weapons for this either," Mr. Zelensky stressed during a visit to Finland.
