Children are the most vulnerable group and often take longer to recover from natural disasters. When storms and floods pass, they are often the hardest hit, losing their homes, schools, clean water, education opportunities and health care.

UNICEF Vietnam's emergency response team is on the ground, working closely with the Government of Vietnam to provide essential support to children and families in areas severely affected by floods.

UNICEF experts participate in a survey and damage assessment mission after the storm within the framework of the Disaster Risk Reduction Partnership.

Mr. Ly Phat Viet Linh - UNICEF Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction Program Expert, visited Yen Binh Primary School, Huu Lung District, Lang Son Province. The water has receded, but Mr. Linh said that his personal observation is that the water level may have been 3.5-4 meters high.

"All desks, chairs, books, teaching equipment and computers were completely damaged, covered with mud about 20cm thick. UNICEF wants to accompany partners to bring the fastest support to students here. Speed and action are what we always aim for," he shared.

From 29 September to early October, typhoons Bualoi and Matmo caused prolonged heavy rains, severe flooding and landslides in northern provinces of Viet Nam, leaving behind extensive damage. Many children and families lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods and were cut off from essential services.

Accordingly, UNICEF and its partners are working to support the most vulnerable children after storms Bualoi and Matmo, through activities such as providing cash assistance, restoring clean water and sanitation systems, rebuilding learning spaces, providing health care and nutrition, as well as psychological support, helping them overcome difficulties soon and continue their studies stably.
