Does drinking coconut water help with weight loss?

VnExpressVnExpress23/11/2023

Coconut water is low in calories and sugar, and rich in essential minerals that help boost energy levels and support weight loss.

Coconut water has a refreshing flavor and not only replenishes electrolytes but also boosts energy after exercise. According to Dr. Nguyen Anh Duy Tung, a specialist at Nutrihome Nutrition Clinic System, this drink also contains natural enzymes and minerals including potassium, fiber, and protein, making it suitable for weight loss.

Low in sugar, calories, and fat-free.

Coconut water is fat-free, very low in calories (about 44 kcal in a pure cup), and has a soothing effect on the stomach. Thanks to its potassium content and bioactive enzymes, it also aids digestion, which is beneficial for those looking to lose weight.

Low glycemic index (GI)

Fruit juices tend to raise blood sugar levels, while coconut water has a relatively low glycemic index. Drinking coconut water also improves insulin sensitivity and stabilizes the body's electrolyte levels, making weight loss easier.

Boost metabolism

A slow metabolism leads to slow digestion, which can contribute to obesity. Coconut water has certain properties that are beneficial for weight loss. Nutrients like potassium and enzymes help boost metabolism and support increased calorie burning in the body.

Increase feelings of fullness.

According to Doctor Duy Tung, drinking coconut water creates a feeling of fullness, reducing appetite. Regularly drinking this beverage also maintains electrolyte balance in the body, thereby controlling high blood pressure and improving digestive functions.

Lose fat, gain muscle.

With its low calorie content, ability to prevent high cholesterol, and speed up metabolism, coconut water can convert fat into energy. This helps limit fat accumulation in the body and maintain leaner muscle mass.

Supports thyroid function

The thyroid gland is responsible for producing hormones that play a vital role in the body. If the body lacks these hormones, the metabolic rate slows down, which can lead to weight gain. Coconut water supports thyroid function, bringing the metabolic rate back to normal.

Coconut water can be drunk at many times of the day, but certain times may offer better benefits. Doctor Duy Tung recommends that people trying to lose weight drink coconut water early in the morning on an empty stomach. The lauric acid content can boost the body's immunity, thereby increasing feelings of freshness and energy at the start of the day.

Coconut water is also a refreshing drink, making it suitable for consumption after work or lunch to relieve stress and fatigue. Although coconut water is good for weight loss, it should not be overused. Drinking just one coconut a day is best. Consuming too much can increase blood sugar levels, leading to weight gain.

Dr. Tung stated that the following situations require caution when drinking coconut water.

People with heart and kidney problems: Coconut water contains a large amount of potassium, a mineral that is not good for patients with heart (blood pressure) and kidney problems.

People with irritable bowel syndrome: This drink contains a lot of carbohydrates which can cause or worsen digestive symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome.

For people with diabetes: Although the sugar content in coconut water is relatively low, consuming too much can still increase blood sugar levels. Diabetic patients should not overindulge in this beverage.
