On August 13th, Nam Dinh FC announced that Nguyen Van Toan had undergone knee meniscus surgery in Ho Chi Minh City. The surgery lasted over an hour and went smoothly.

Nam Dinh FC's head coach, Vu Hong Viet, called and encouraged Van Toan. He said the team is ready to create the best possible conditions for the striker to return to training with the rest of the team as soon as possible.

According to the club's doctors, Van Toan is expected to need about 5-6 months to return to playing. Toan is currently staying in Ho Chi Minh City for further monitoring by doctors over the next few days before being discharged and returning home.

Therefore, Van Toan will miss the first half of the 2025-2026 V-League season with Nam Dinh Club.

Previously, the Nam Dinh team also confirmed that they would not be able to have Xuan Son available for the upcoming period, so the team had to recruit many new players to fill the two important positions left vacant.

Van Toan will also miss three matches with the Vietnamese national team this year. In October and November, coach Kim Sang Sik's team will play three matches against Nepal and Laos in Group F of the third round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Nam Dinh FC announced that Van Toan suffered an injury while playing for the Vietnamese national team in the ASEAN Cup 2024. Since then, Toan has continued to play in the V-League, but his performance has been significantly affected. Therefore, he decided to undergo surgery for a definitive treatment.

Born in 1996 in Hai Duong province, Van Toan is one of the outstanding strikers trained by Hoang Anh Gia Lai. He was a member of the "Changzhou heroes" generation and a reserve player for coach Park Hang Seo in the Vietnam U23 team and the Vietnam national team from 2018 to 2022.

Even when the Vietnamese national team transitioned under coaches Philippe Troussier and Kim Sang Sik, Van Toan continued to regularly feature in important tournaments such as the Asian Cup and World Cup qualifiers.

At the ASEAN Cup 2024, Van Toan only played in 4 group stage matches before having to stop due to a torn knee ligament.
