On August 13th, Venus Williams (a two-time US Open champion) was awarded a wildcard entry by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to participate in the mixed doubles event next week. Meanwhile, the women's singles matches will take place on August 24th.
ESPN, citing the International Tennis Federation, reported that the American player will be the oldest player to participate in the singles event at this tournament since Renee Richards (47 years old) in 1981.
At the 2023 US Open, she also received a wildcard but was eliminated early in the first round. Last year, Williams underwent surgery to remove uterine fibroids and missed much of the season.
After more than a year away, the 45-year-old tennis player returned to professional tennis in July 2025. She won one match at the DC Open before being eliminated in the first round in Cincinnati last week.
The legendary American tennis player boasts an impressive career record, having won 7 singles titles, including 2 US Open championships (2000 and 2001). Together with her sister Serena Williams, she won 14 women's doubles titles and 2 mixed doubles titles.
It seemed as though the American tennis player had retired with 23 Grand Slam titles after participating in the 2022 US Open. But after more than two decades, the American legend still retains his passion, willpower, and stamina to compete against the younger generation.
Her presence is not just a sporting story, but a timeless source of inspiration.
