In 2024, Yen Bai province recorded significant progress in agricultural exports. The total export value of processed agricultural and forestry products reached over 160 million USD, accounting for 37.7% of the province's total export value. This growth momentum is expected to continue in the first quarter of 2025, with the province's total export value estimated at 120.05 million USD, a 25% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Among key products, cinnamon from Van Yen almost holds the top position. Yen Bai's cinnamon products not only dominate the domestic market but also reach demanding markets such as China and Europe, and have even made their way to the United Kingdom. The province's cinnamon cultivation area exceeds 81,000 hectares, and encouragingly, the area of organically certified cinnamon is steadily increasing.
Mr. Nguyen Ba Mao, Production Manager of Vietnam Cinnamon and Star Anise Production and Export Joint Stock Company, said: "Yen Bai cinnamon has a distinctive flavor and superior quality. We always strive to increase the added value of cinnamon products through deep processing into various products such as cinnamon essential oil, cinnamon powder, and cinnamon handicrafts. We also focus on building organic cinnamon raw material areas to meet the increasing demands of the international market, especially the US and European markets."
Besides, Suoi Giang Shan Tuyet tea is also a bright spot in Yen Bai's agricultural export landscape. This product has received OCOP certification and is present in the UK market. Suoi Giang Cooperative's Shan Tuyet black tea and Shan Tuyet leaf tea have achieved European standard certification and are exported to the UK and Japan. Kien Thuan General Service Cooperative has also successfully exported tea to many markets such as the US, Saudi Arabia, and Europe. Furthermore, Muong Lo Seng Cu rice and Tan Tu Le sticky rice, with protected geographical indications, are confidently targeting the high-end market segment...
To achieve these accomplishments, the active support and attention from the Yen Bai provincial government cannot be overlooked. The province has implemented a series of policies and initiatives to create favorable conditions and promote the development of the agricultural sector, especially with a focus on exports. One of the province's top priorities is improving the quality and standards of agricultural and forestry products.
To date, the province has over 23,000 hectares of forest certified under FSC and organic standards. Simultaneously, 77 planting area codes have been issued to serve domestic consumption and export for various crops. Production processes according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and Organic standards are widely applied. Yen Bai aims to have traceability for at least 10 key agricultural, forestry, aquatic, and food product groups by 2025. In addition, Yen Bai also focuses on protecting intellectual property rights for key agricultural products, supporting the registration of geographical indications and trademark protection.
Trade promotion and market expansion are also given special attention by the province. Accordingly, Yen Bai supports businesses in promoting their products through various channels, creating opportunities to participate in domestic and international trade fairs and exhibitions; actively supporting key agricultural production facilities in the digital transformation process. At the same time, it implements many policies to directly support agricultural production and processing, encouraging the development of concentrated, specialized production areas, applying science and technology to production, and supporting the production of agricultural products according to organic standards and environmental protection. In particular, the province focuses on building production linkages and value chains in agriculture, supporting cooperatives and models of production and consumption linkages for agricultural products.
To further boost consumption and exports in the coming period, Yen Bai encourages and supports investment in the deep processing of key agricultural products such as cinnamon, tea, and bamboo shoots; building and promoting brands for the province's agricultural specialties, effectively utilizing existing geographical indications and expanding them to other potential products; proactively seeking and exploiting new export markets, in addition to traditional markets, especially those with high demand for organic and high-quality products; continuing to support and expand sustainable and organic agricultural production models to meet the green consumption trend; strengthening cooperation and linkages between farmers, cooperatives, processing and export businesses to build sustainable and efficient agricultural value chains... gradually affirming the position of this region with rich agricultural potential on the map of Vietnamese and international agricultural products.
