With this achievement, Vietnam ranked 3rd out of 81 participating countries and territories.

Specifically, the three students who won gold medals are: Dang Tuan Anh, 12th grade, Chu Van An High School, Hanoi; Nguyen Tien Loc, 12th grade, High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences , Vietnam National University, Hanoi; and Nguyen Si Hieu, 12th grade, Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students, Hai Phong.

The Silver Medal belongs to Ho Duc Trung, grade 12, Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted, Thua Thien - Hue province.

The 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2024 was held in the Republic of Kazakhstan from July 7-13. This was the largest number of participating countries to date, with 81 countries and territories and 320 contestants.

According to the regulations of the International IBO Association, the competition awards prizes to no more than 10% of participants who win Gold medals, 20% who win Silver medals, and 30% who win Bronze medals. This year, the total number of medals awarded included 28 Gold medals, 56 Silver medals, and 84 Bronze medals.

Candidates undergo two official examination days, with examination time lasting 6-8 hours per day. This includes one day of theoretical exams (two papers) and one day of practical exams in four laboratories covering: Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Animal Physiology, and Bioinformatics.

This year's exam requires candidates to have a thorough understanding of both theory and proficiency in practical skills, applying correctly and effectively the knowledge and skills of biology, from classical to modern, in solving a variety of problems related to global issues.

This year's performance by Vietnamese students at the International Biology Olympiad is the best since 2019. Notably, for the first time, many Vietnamese students achieved high scores in the practical exams, which demand very high standards at this competition.

In recent years, Vietnamese students have achieved high results at international Olympiads, with the number and quality of medals and average scores of students continuously improving, approaching the level of leading countries in the same field.
