Vietnam has the first super CT scanner with more than 100,000 slices

Tam Anh General Hospital system has put into use the Somatom Force VB30 CT scanner integrated with AI, which is considered a new revolution in diagnosis, very early detection and good support for the treatment of many dangerous diseases.

On the afternoon of February 7th, Tam Anh General Hospital announced the launch of the new generation CT scanner from Siemens Healthineers (Germany), the first and only one of its kind in Vietnam.

The launch and commissioning ceremony of the Somatom Force VB30 super CT scanner took place in Hanoi on the afternoon of February 7th.

Breakthrough in diagnostic imaging technology

At the ceremony, Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Xuan Hien, Director of the Center for Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Hanoi, stated that the Somatom Force VB30 super-machine, capable of reproducing over 100,000 slices in a single scan, embodies the cutting-edge technology of the diagnostic imaging field today.

The machine boasts the largest number of slices and the thinnest slices, capable of dissecting detailed structures within the human body, making it extremely useful for the very early and accurate detection of abnormalities at the "microscopic" level. Therefore, the device can be applied in many fields of medical examination and treatment such as Neurology - Head and Neck, Thoracic, Cardiovascular, Abdominal, Musculoskeletal, Nephrology - Urology, Orthopedics, etc.

The Somatom Force VB30 super-high-speed CT scanner has been put into operation. It features ALPHA and Fast technology.

The most advanced ALPHA and Fast Phase technologies help to mark and analyze anatomical landmarks in the human body, automatically identifying anatomical landmarks on X-ray images. This assists doctors in quickly locating organs, soft tissues, bones, blood vessels, etc., reducing the unavoidable subjective errors that humans often make when manually measuring and analyzing images.

Furthermore, AI applications automatically adjust and select the clearest and most useful images to help doctors make faster, more convenient, and more accurate diagnoses, reducing the need for additional diagnostic tests as was previously required. AI also assists doctors in selecting the appropriate imaging area and number of slices to avoid wasting time and money.

Fabian Martin Singer, Managing Director of Siemens Healthineers Vietnam, stated that with its superior scanning speed and detailed image quality, the Somatom Force VB30 CT scanner can assist doctors in making more accurate and faster diagnoses, thereby optimizing treatment protocols and improving treatment effectiveness for patients.

It has low X-ray dose and is reasonably priced.

Associate Professor Hien stated that in the past, newborns were often restricted from undergoing CT scans due to concerns that high radiation doses could affect their development. Doctors had to find safer alternative imaging methods, but these were not as accurate.

The Somatom Force VB30 CT scanner, with its ultra-low dose scanning capability thanks to its tin filter and Turbo Flash mode for automatic dose reduction, is suitable for use with children and infants. According to the American Medical Physical Society, the Somatom Force VB30 is one of the CT systems with the lowest X-ray dose. This technology reduces X-ray dose by up to 85% compared to conventional CT, combined with a high-quality tin filter to minimize X-ray exposure while maintaining good image quality.

In practice, the application of the Somatom Force VB30 CT scanner has shown outstanding effectiveness in disease screening and diagnosis. For example, in the case of three-day-old Tran Van Kien, who came to Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi with wheezing due to bronchiolitis, a chest X-ray revealed pneumothorax, but the imaging data was insufficient to determine the cause.

The child underwent a CT scan of the lungs using a Somatom Force VB30 machine, with a radiation dose of only 0.14 mSv, equivalent to a single X-ray. The results showed that the child had a microscopic congenital air cyst rupture, causing pneumothorax. The child was then treated according to the doctor's protocol, and their health improved.

The CT scan from the Somatom Force VB30 machine showed a ruptured lung cyst with an extremely small diameter, only about 2mm, in the child.

The Somatom Force VB30 CT scanner is currently scarce worldwide , only available at a few leading medical centers in the US, Germany, and the Netherlands. In Vietnam, Tam Anh General Hospital is the first and only institution to own and operate the Somatom Force VB30 CT scanner, marking a significant step forward in improving the quality of diagnostic imaging in Vietnam.

Professor Ngo Quy Chau, Deputy General Director of Professional Affairs at Tam Anh General Hospital System, stated that the Somatom Force VB30 CT scanner will be prioritized for use in the diagnosis and early detection of dangerous diseases that are challenging for medicine, such as stroke, heart attack, coronary artery disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, brain tumors; and diseases of the lungs, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, musculoskeletal system, and urinary tract… "The hospital will apply reasonable costs to support more patients in benefiting from this cutting-edge technology," Professor Chau informed.

Mr. Simon Kreye, Deputy Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Vietnam, believes that by pioneering the application of advanced diagnostic imaging technology from Germany, Tam Anh General Hospital will not only raise the healthcare standards of the institution but also bring the Vietnamese healthcare system closer to international standards.

According to Simon Kreye, Deputy Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Vietnam, the commissioning of the Somatom Force VB30 CT scanner at Tam Anh General Hospital not only marks a significant step forward in the development of Vietnamese medicine but also demonstrates the strong cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Germany, especially in the fields of technology and healthcare.
