On April 26, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang answered a reporter's question regarding comments related to Taiwanese Coast Guard Chief Kuan Bi-ling's visit to Ba Binh Island this week to participate in exercises, including drills involving armed landings on suspicious vessels.
"Any foreign activities on the features of the Spratly and Paracel Islands without Vietnam's consent are acts of infringement on Vietnam's sovereignty and are invalid," emphasized Pham Thu Hang, Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ba Binh Island has the largest natural area within Vietnam's Truong Sa archipelago, but it is illegally occupied by Taiwan, which once deployed marine forces there.
Since 2000, Taiwan has replaced its garrison on Taiping Island with a coast guard unit equipped with weapons such as machine guns and long-range mortars. This force regularly conducts illegal live-fire exercises in the waters surrounding Taiping Island.
Vietnam has repeatedly stated that it possesses ample historical evidence and legal grounds to assert its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos in accordance with international law.
