On May 23rd, the Ministry of Education and Training received official information regarding the results of the Vietnamese national team participating in the 26th Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO 2026), held in Busan, South Korea from May 17th to May 25th.

All 8/8 Vietnamese students participating in the competition won medals, including 6 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. Specifically:

  • Nguyen Nhat Minh, an 11th-grade student from the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences , University of Natural Sciences (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), won a silver medal.
  • Ta Ngoc Minh, a 12th-grade student from Bac Ninh Specialized High School, Bac Ninh province, won a silver medal.
  • Vu Nguyen Nguyen, an 11th-grade student from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students in Hanoi, won a silver medal.
  • Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, a 12th-grade student from Le Hong Phong Specialized High School in Ninh Binh, won a silver medal.
  • Phan Tuan Dung, a 12th-grade student from Hung Vuong Specialized High School in Phu Tho province, won a silver medal.
  • Bui Anh Tu, an 11th-grade student from Bien Hoa Specialized High School in Ninh Binh province, won a silver medal.
  • Le Duy Khanh, an 11th-grade student from Lam Son Specialized High School in Thanh Hoa, won a bronze medal.
  • Mai Van Khanh, an 11th-grade student from Lam Son Specialized High School in Thanh Hoa, won a bronze medal.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the 2026 Asian Physics Olympiad will feature 28 delegations from 27 countries and territories, with 209 contestants. This is one of the most competitive regional Olympiads, bringing together many strong physics teams from the Asia-Pacific region.

APhO 2026 consists of two official exam days: one for the theoretical exam and one for the practical exam. Each exam day lasts 5 hours.

This year's exam content is highly selective, requiring candidates to have a solid grasp of fundamental knowledge, the ability to model, solve mathematical problems, and apply their knowledge to practical situations.

The theoretical exam consists of three parts, covering mechanics of weighing systems, X-ray diffraction in material structure research, and magnetic resonance in external fields. The problems connect fundamental physics knowledge with applications in precision measurement, materials science, semiconductor technology, sensors, and several modern technologies.

The practical exam consists of two parts, focusing on the design and operation of a measurement system. The first part, "water meter," requires candidates to apply fluid mechanics, measurement skills, data processing, and error analysis.

The second exercise uses Micro:bit's analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to estimate an unknown resistance, thereby testing the experimental design capabilities, identifying errors, and developing a reliable measurement method.

With the above results, Vietnam is among the top 8 teams with the highest results and is in the group of 5 teams where all participating students won medals (along with South Korea 1, China, Taiwan (China) and Russia).

"This is a very commendable result, especially considering the high level of competition in the exam and the presence of many strong teams," according to the Ministry of Education and Training.

Notably, the Vietnamese team participating in APhO 2026 includes 5 out of 8 students who are 11th graders. The Ministry of Education and Training believes this shows that the team will not only achieve good results at APhO 2026, but also opens up great opportunities at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in 2026 and affirms that Vietnam has a highly potential pool of successors for the APhO and IPhO competitions in 2027.

The achievements of the Vietnamese national team at APhO 2026 demonstrate the efforts, courage, and determination of the students; and also show the effectiveness of the work of identifying, selecting, and nurturing talented physics students in recent years.

According to the Organizing Committee's schedule, the closing ceremony and awards presentation of APhO 2026 will take place on May 24th in Busan, South Korea.
