Advances in deep learning have ushered in a groundbreaking era of technological innovation, enabling machines to "learn" from massive amounts of data and achieve incredible accuracy in tasks such as image recognition, natural language processing, and decision-making.

This achievement is thanks to the revolutionary contributions to neural networks and deep learning algorithms from Professor Geoff E. Hinton, Professor Yann LeCun, and Professor Yoshua Bengio. In addition, Jen-Hsun Huang pioneered the development of accelerated computing platforms, fueling the explosion of the modern AI (Artificial Intelligence) era. Professor Fei-Fei Li's creation of the ImageNet dataset also propelled advancements in image recognition systems, enabling the training of deep learning models on a large scale.

Professor Kristi S. Anseth said she was honored to receive the award and thanked the VinFuture Foundation for awarding her the prize to honor female scientists.

"I have been very fortunate to work in a dynamic field – materials design – and we have combined biomedical materials science to improve people's health around the world. My career has been an amazing journey, and I thank everyone who has stood by me, guided me, and encouraged me when I faced challenges. I especially thank my husband and daughter for their unconditional support. I hope my 17-year-old daughter and the younger generation will be inspired. The world needs more female scientists," said Professor Kristi S. Anseth emotionally.

The VinFuture 2024 Special Award for scientists researching new fields was presented to three professors.

The VinFuture 2024 Special Prize for Scientists researching new fields was awarded to Professor Zelig Eshhar, Professor Carl H. June, and Professor Michel Sadelain for their development of CAR T cell therapy for the treatment of cancer and other diseases.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that in today's volatile world with many difficulties and challenges, science and technology and innovation are the shortest and most effective paths for us to break through, reach further, soar higher, integrate into the development process, and make the world and humanity increasingly better, more prosperous, and happier.

Expressing his delight that VinFuture Science Week 2024 and today's awards ceremony bring together the "elite" and "giants" of world science with outstanding scientific achievements, especially the four honored scientific works, the Prime Minister stated that, encompassing core fields such as computer science, public health, global health, materials science, and regenerative medicine, the works honored today are all groundbreaking initiatives and important solutions to address common global, people-to-people, and comprehensive challenges, contributing to shaping the future of the world.

"The Vietnamese Party and State, and we, believe that the VinFuture Award will continue to create momentum and strongly inspire scientists, entrepreneurs, especially the young generation of Vietnam, with their enthusiasm, aspirations, will to excel, and perseverance to realize their dreams and ambitions," said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

The head of government also emphasized that Vietnam has always paid special attention to science, technology, and innovation, considering it an objective requirement, a strategic choice, a top priority, and a national policy to promote rapid and sustainable development in the new era – an era of national prosperity and strength, as General Secretary To Lam has outlined.

In its efforts to "catch up, keep pace, break through, and surpass," Vietnam clearly identifies the particularly important significance, prioritizes resources, and focuses on perfecting institutions, mechanisms, and policies for the development of science and technology and innovation, especially in emerging and particularly important sectors such as digital transformation, green transformation, creative economy, semiconductor chips, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things…

The Prime Minister hopes that scientists, the business community, investors, and international and domestic partners will continue to cooperate closely, support, and assist Vietnam more effectively in achieving breakthroughs in enhancing its scientific and technological capabilities and innovation. This includes focusing on building and perfecting institutions and policies with the perspective that "institutions are the breakthrough of breakthroughs," developing infrastructure, high-quality human resources, venture capital funds, and effectively mobilizing and utilizing all resources from within and outside the country for science and technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Through this, the goal is to create momentum for breakthroughs and successfully realize the strategic objectives: striving to become a developing country with modern industry and high middle income by 2030, and a developed country with high income by 2045.

The Prime Minister affirmed Vietnam's commitment to creating the most favorable conditions for scientists, science and technology, and innovation to shine and develop strongly. With the spirit of "harmonious benefits, shared risks," Vietnam always welcomes and encourages scientists, the business community, and investors to realize their ideas, opportunities, and investment projects in Vietnam.

Vietnam is committed to continuously improving its science and technology environment and innovation, always being a reliable partner, a loyal companion, and striving its utmost to contribute as one of the "torchbearers" in developing the global science and technology, startup, and innovation ecosystem.
