According to a report published on June 21, Wendy Rush - Communications Director of OceanGate, the company that owns the Titan submersible - is the granddaughter of Isidor and Ida Straus, who died after the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic more than 100 years ago.
Wendy Rush was born Wendy Hollings Weil, a descendant of one of Straus' daughters, Minnie. In 1905, Minnie married Dr. Richard Weil, Wendy Rush's great-grandfather.

A fictionalized version of the Straus relationship was included in James Cameron's 1997 film Titanic , which featured the couple embracing as water rose in their cabin. However, survivors recalled seeing the Strauss on deck as the ship sank, according to the Times .
Isidor and Ida Straus were a wealthy couple who were among the wealthiest people on the Titanic. Isidor co-owned the Macy's department store at the time, the Times reported.
In 2017, the couple's great-grandson Kurzman shared details of his relatives' experiences on the ill-fated ship with Today .
"My great-grandmother Ida got into the lifeboat hoping that her husband would follow. When he didn't, she got very worried and the officer in charge of lowering the lifeboat said, 'Well, Mr. Straus, you're an old man... and we all know who you are... Of course, you can get into the lifeboat with your wife.' My great-grandfather said, 'No. Until I see that every woman and child on this ship is in the lifeboat, I'm not going to get into the lifeboat myself,'" Kurzman said.
According to a wedding announcement obtained by the Times , Wendy Rush married Stockton Rush — the operator of the Titan submersible — in 1986.

OceanGate charges passengers up to $250,000 per person to travel to the site of the 1912 Titanic disaster to see the remains of the ship, CBS News reported.
OceanGate's website says Titan's "use of advanced materials" makes it "more cost-effective" than any other deep-sea submersible. The company also claims Titan is built with "a combination of groundbreaking engineering and off-the-shelf technology" that gives it "a unique advantage over other submersibles."
Stockton Rush (61 years old) went missing with 4 others on the Titan ship on June 18, at a depth of 3,800 m off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
