Summer-Autumn Crop 2025: Rice prices stabilize but profits decrease.

At this time, farmers in some areas of the province are focusing on harvesting the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop, while the sharp increase in input costs has resulted in low profits for farmers.

Farmers harvest the summer-autumn rice crop.

Low profit

Having just sold nearly 11 tons of rice from the Summer-Autumn crop, Mr. Nguyen Van Nghi, residing in Xom Ruong hamlet, Hao Duoc commune, Tay Ninh province, said that his family cultivated nearly 4 hectares of rice this season, of which about 1.7 hectares of OM 5451 rice have just been harvested. The price of fresh rice sold to traders at the field is 5,600 VND/kg.

According to Mr. Nghi, compared to the same period last year, this year's weather conditions have been unfavorable. From the beginning of the season, there have been many consecutive heavy rains and high humidity, leading to an increase in diseases during the rice flowering stage, affecting yield. In addition, the price of rice has also decreased by about 800-1,000 VND/kg, so post-harvest profits are not as expected.

Low rice prices coupled with rising agricultural input costs are resulting in increasingly smaller profits for farmers.

While harvesting over 1 hectare of OM 5451 rice in Voi hamlet, Ben Cau commune, Tay Ninh province, farmer Nguyen Van Binh said that before harvesting, traders came to the field to inspect the rice and agreed on a price of 5,800 VND/kg; with about 12 bags of rice per hectare, he estimates the yield this season to be about 6.5 tons/ha.

Fertilizer prices continue to rise.

Compared to the beginning of 2025, the prices of many types of inorganic fertilizers (chemical fertilizers) have increased by tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dong per 50 kg bag. The sharpest price increases are seen in some types of DAP and nitrogen fertilizers (urea), while NPK, potassium, and phosphorus fertilizers have seen less significant increases.

According to Mr. Binh, the selling price of rice this season is the same as the previous Winter-Spring season, while the yield is lower and investment costs have increased due to the higher prices of fertilizers and pesticides (about 15% higher than last season), so the profit farmers earn after 3 months of cultivation is not high.

According to many farmers harvesting early summer-autumn rice in Phuoc Chi, Ben Cau, Ninh Dien, and Hao Duoc communes (Tay Ninh province), this crop usually has higher investment costs than the winter-spring crop because the soil is no longer rich in nutrients, and many pests and diseases persist from the previous crop. Therefore, to ensure good rice growth and high yields, farmers have to increase the amount of fertilizer and proactively use pesticides to control pests and diseases.

Farmers in Ben Cau commune are busy with the rice harvest.

“The total investment cost for one hectare of rice this season is about 28 million VND/ha, including land preparation, field cleaning, irrigation, rice seeds, agricultural supplies, hiring labor for transplanting, harvesting, etc. All costs have increased, especially fertilizer prices, while yields have decreased and selling prices are 2,000 - 2,500 VND/kg lower than the same period last year, so making a profit after harvest, even a small one, is something to be happy about,” a farmer in Ben Cau commune further shared.

According to several agricultural supply dealers in Thanh Dien, Ninh Dien, and Ben Cau communes, the price of urea fertilizers such as Phu My Urea, Ca Mau Urea, etc., is currently at 600,000 - 650,000 VND/bag. This price is about 70,000 - 100,000 VND/bag higher, depending on the type, compared to the same period last year.

Many other types of DAP fertilizer are also sold at relatively high prices. Korean DAP costs from 1,200,000 to 1,300,000 VND/bag; Chinese DAP (yellow granules), Russian DAP (black and green granules) are priced at 960,000 to 1,100,000 VND/bag.

Meanwhile, the price of NPK 20-20-15 from Ba Con Co and Binh Dien is currently at 1,000,000 - 1,100,000 VND/bag. Potassium (from Russia, Belarus, and Israel) is priced at 460,000 - 580,000 VND/bag. Phosphate fertilizer (Long Thanh) is priced at 250,000 - 260,000 VND/bag, and phosphate (Van Dien) at 300,000 - 320,000 VND/bag,…

Agricultural supplies have to pass through many intermediaries before reaching farmers, leading to inflated prices compared to prices at manufacturing plants and import points. Rising fertilizer prices have led to increased production costs for rice and many other crops, causing farmers' profits to decrease. Meanwhile, recently, many agricultural products have not been able to maintain the high prices seen in the same period last year.
