Vegetables are not high-value commodities; however, during Tet (Lunar New Year), demand increases sharply, leading to a much higher supply of vegetables to the market compared to normal days, thus increasing farmers' income. The Tet vegetable crop is the time of year that brings in the highest income, so to proactively ensure supply for the Tet market, farmers are actively caring for and investing in production.

This year's winter-spring crop season in Phu Tan commune saw the planting of over 391 hectares of various vegetables, including a large quantity of green cabbage, shallots, corn, chili peppers, and scallions. To ensure a successful winter-spring crop and a sufficient supply of vegetables for the Tet holiday market, the local government proactively assigned specialized staff to regularly monitor crop growth and provide timely guidance to farmers on appropriate technical measures, especially given the complex weather conditions. In addition, the locality intensified propaganda and encouraged farmers to produce safely, use agricultural inputs according to regulations, and strengthen pest and disease control, contributing to stable yields, improved quality of vegetables, and meeting the increased demand during Tet.
Busy tending to his 6,500m² cucumber crop for Tet (Lunar New Year), Mr. Nguyen Van Loc, residing in My Hoa 1 hamlet, said that he planted cucumbers to supply the Tet market, and every step from watering and fertilizing to pest control is done carefully. Currently, his family's cucumbers are growing well, promising a stable income during Tet. Mr. Loc shared: “After about a month of care, cucumbers can be harvested continuously for 20 days, with a yield of about 4 tons; with a selling price of 6,500 - 7,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, I earn a profit of 10 million VND per hectare. I hope the price of cucumbers remains stable so that farmers can have income to celebrate Tet.”
Across the vegetable fields, many farmers also focus on growing short-term crops such as: mustard greens, edamame, corn, shallots… For each crop, farmers carefully plan the planting time and care according to weather conditions to ensure a good harvest for Tet (Lunar New Year). Mr. Nguyen Van Thai, residing in Tan Thanh hamlet, cultivates 1,000 square meters of scallions for sale during Tet. With many years of experience growing scallions, he proactively chooses the appropriate planting time, focuses on care, and closely monitors the growth process to ensure the vegetables develop well and uniformly. Thanks to the limited use of pesticides, Mr. Thai's family's scallions grow steadily and maintain quality. Mr. Thai said: “My family grows scallions in a safe way, using fertilizers appropriately and limiting pesticides with the desire to provide a source of clean vegetables for consumers. The market price of scallions is about 18,000 VND/kg, and I hope the price will be higher in the future.”
Like other farmers, Mr. Duong Van Khiet is actively monitoring and carefully tending to his family's 3 hectares of vegetable soybeans. According to Mr. Khiet, previously, rice farming was inefficient and only provided enough to cover living expenses. Since switching to vegetable soybean farming, his family's income has increased. Mr. Khiet now has over 10 years of experience growing vegetable soybeans. Vegetable soybeans are ready for harvest 65-70 days after planting. Because each crop is short, it's possible to produce four consecutive vegetable soybean crops per year or rotate them with other crops. "Normally, the selling price of vegetable soybeans is around 15,000 VND/kg, but near Tet (Lunar New Year), it reaches 20,000 VND/kg. Therefore, I and other farmers growing vegetable soybeans are excited and carefully tending to the Tet crop," Mr. Khiet said.
With Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) fast approaching, the atmosphere across the vegetable fields remains bustling with activity. Thanks to the diligence and hard work of the farmers, coupled with the timely support and assistance from the local authorities, the Tet vegetable crop promises a bountiful harvest.
